need help w cloning details

  1. Yesterday got all my clones into starter pots in a tray. They have root hormone, 74-77 degrees, high humidity under a plastic dome. How often should i spritz them w h2o? how often should I water the dirt? At what point should I remove the dome or open it up to lower humidity? thanks

  2. i dont use a dome but i think you should be spraying the inside of the dome, not the plants themselves.

  3. I light most them on tops. But mostly lid. Just got roots in 8 days on my green crack (tough to clone) cuttings using aloe soaked Rockwool. And a quick clonex dip. With a light coconut and aloe mist on day 5.

  4. how often?

  5. Usually I mist once in the morning once in evening.

  6. Are you using a sprouting warmer pad? They are cheap, and really speed up rooting of clones. I have had 100% success rate in rock wool cubes soaked in ph adjusted water with lemon juice (instructions on rock wool package). I put the cubes in Dixie cups with a little water in the bottom of the cup. I only covered for the first few days.

  7. Yes a pad is preferred.
I use a utility closet that stay warm from my home theatre components running.

  8. The trick with having healthy and happy clones is knowing how much moisture to give them. I use one of those cheap clone trays with a dome and a drip tray to clone and have about a 99% success rate. I think I've lost one clone in the last 4 years. LOL It took me awhile to figure out the best way to do it and I'm going to try to explain it to you here as best I can.
Clean up your tray well with alcohol or peroxide before you put any clones in the tray. Cut the clone and dip in rooter hormone and put in plug (I use rapid rooter plugs. They are antibacterial and work much better than rockwool.) I place the clones in the tray skipping a space between every one so I have room to work and be able to see what's going on with them. I use Clonex rooting gel and then mix up some Clonex solution in a spray bottle (adjust pH to proper range after mixing up). I don't put any solution in the bottom of the tray. I found along the way that I could do just as good a job with a spray bottle as long as I know what I'm doing. Anyway, I put the clones in the Rapid Rooter Plugs and then soak each plug with the Clonex solution from the spray bottle and put it in the tray. Once I get all the clones I want for that run cut and in the tray, I spray the lid of the dome with plain water to create humidity inside and replace the dome and set tray under my veg light (T5). My tray has a vent on top controlled with a dial and I make sure the vent is closed to start with. I usually start venting them about the end of the third day and by the 6th and 7th day, the hood comes off and they're just getting plain light by that time. But here's the trick....Once you get them cut and in the plugs and in the tray with the cubes soaked....you don't do anything else to them until you start to see the tops of the rooter cubes starting to dry out...the color will be a good bit lighter than they look when they're moistened and sprayed with cloning solution. This tells you that they have just about used up the solution that was in the cube to start with and will need some more. The closer you let them get to being dried out before you give them more solution, the better. It's not good for them to just sit in liquid and allowing the cube to get almost dry forces the roots to work a little bit to get their food and they'll be stronger and healthier because of it. You want to let them get almost dried out completely and then use the spray bottle to moisten the cube again with the Clonex solution. Replace the dome and put them back under the light. Like I said, I start to vent them around the end of the third day, a little at first, and as time progresses give them more venting to temper them to the actual climate they will be growing in once the hood is gone for good. I normally start seeing roots come through the cube by 6 or 7 days. Once you see root coming through the cube, you can transplant them into soil. Normally, my roots are so fat that I am forced to take them out and pot them by day #8. The roots will be bursting out of the little hole the cubes fit into. This is the easiest and most successful method I've found. Good luck! TWW

  9. How's all this working out for you inky? With all the other good advice you've been given consider adding this observation to your grower kit bag; plan on taking your cuttings 30 mins after you thoroughly drench the mother with a watering. The plant will take up the water it needs to reach the turgor level it is comfortable with to perform the many, many functions required for cell growth. What this step n the process will do is help to ensure maximum turgor pressure in the cutting such that it will help it to remain stiff and upright. It helps tremendously to water thoroughly, wait, and then do all the other stuff in about 30 mins. And trim those leaves. Very little photosynthesis is going on until new roots are formed. Trimming the leaves back also helps to maintain turgor pressure.

//static.grscty.com//public/style_emoticons/default/bongin.gif... and FWIW I always, always, always, misted - i.e. 'drenched' - both my cuttings and the clone dome. Keep 'em wet, keep 'em warm, and don't let 'em dry out or you'll screw the pooch. If you use a seedling pad keep a vigilant eye on moisture. //static.grscty.com//public/style_emoticons/default/stonedsmilie.gif

  10. is clonex organic though?
u can use aloe vera gel as a rooting hormon. also what i did was soak coir in kelp tea and used cups of that as my "plugs". no dome, just made sure coir was moist all the time, roots in 7-10 days,

  11. I heard clonex wasn't organic. I don't use any hormone

  12. It's not. But aloe works well.

  13. Standard 1.5 rock wool cubes in a standard tray with lid.. With the super low humidity here you really can't ever leave the lid off without a total loss of the tray.. Mist the inside of the dome and not the plants.. I buy the intermediate support tray and chop them into 9 packs for easy handling.. It also lets me rotate the packs to insure all the plants get time in the center and don't spend all the time out on the edge.. This will insure all the clones root at the same time and not just the core ones first..
The second thing this does is hold the cubes off the tray floor letting me flood the tray with enough water to cover the floor.. I rarely have to mist the dome past the initial day..

You can see how much shorter the cube is then the carrier is
    [IMG]
As fast as 9 days and as long as 30.. I don't give up on a cutting till it molds and falls over..
3 finger of stem and a thumbs of a fan is all you need..

The tray helps form this nice little cube of roots containing them so I don't damage them at planting..

  14. $20 aero cloners work well, or even a bubble bucket if you don't need many.

  15. @BNW: Great idea for cloning with cubes. What is the manufacturer of the tray & lid?

  16. It'll all your basic Mondi stuff from the hydro store.. I have one close and I do use them for some stuff like my rock wool cubes, cloning trays, Planter cups as they stock a wide range of sizes to suit any grow style..

  17. Fuck cutting the leaves...
I did that when I first started...

Ones that weren't cut , came out the other side WAY more healthy...
    .
Main thing was Cutting 45...Scraping the sides , and splitting the bottom...

Use a Heat pad on low...

If the temp is about 72-75... No need to mist with my Bubbler...

    Water is on EVERYTHING...

I use Rootech gel.... I've had 100% success...

I made my Bubbler from Nail Containers...
    Aquarium Pump and Air Stone
    Scrap foam...

    I use water with "NOTHING"....

That forces it to send roots out to search for food...

  18. I copied this from my own thread.

With my cuttings i leave some leaves on top, around 2-4 nodes with most leaves left intact and only very large sunleaves removed. strip an inchor three off the stem so that 2-3 nodes will be buried under the soil Then i either let it soak in water overnight and put into an aloe fillet or i just stick the cuttings directly into an
aloe leaf for between 1-30 minutes. After that i place them in moist soil, maybe put them under a dome for a few days and then the dome is removed for more airflow. The time could probably be sped up some, but i find no need
for that. Average time is cultivar dependent and conditions, but averages 10 -20 days for roots showing out the bottom of a 3.5" container. with temperatures between 60-85 degrees. As long as l pay attention i tend to have 80-90% rooting rates with canna.

I use a basic mix of some form of aeration, peat moss/leaf mold and a
little bit of earth worm castings for just about everything from canna
    to mint to rosemary etc.

my super fancy gel based solution with rooting hormones and cell proliferants that is easy to grow at home! //static.grscty.com//public/style_emoticons/default/happy.png

    85 AFTER roots....

I hear 85 kills clones that are trying to root....

Once they have roots and planted.... 85 is fine...
