Storing Seeds Question

  1. Wans't sure where to ask this...

I found a container that i would like to store some seeds in. It's an aluminum tea container, the kind that has a hard rubber gasket that comes down from the cap and snuggly fits inside the container forming an air-tight seal.

Problem is, the container still smells (very pleasantly) of the orange tea it once contained.

I washed the container and cap thoroughly with normal dish soap, and dried it all under a fan for 24 hours. The smell has dissipated somewhat, but still persists.

Should I worry about storing seeds in this container? Will the lingering smell of the orange tea somehow contaminate or degrade my seeds

  4. Keep one of those dehumidifiers packs in with them. They come in shoeboxes and beef jerkey. Moisture and heat will ruin seeds, tea smell will be fine

  5. After a bit of research and discussion I've cocluded that it would be perfectly safe to store seeds in this container despite the faint residual tea fragrance.

The main point here being that the molecules responsible for the fragrance are not oxidizing agents. In other words, they will not break down the seeds in anyway.

On top of that, after my thorough scrubbing, the PPM of those molecules is probably extremely low, a true testament to the power of our olfactory senses.

@capt.murphy -yes, i do use silica gel packets when storing seeds, and it's a good point to bring up. I've seen a lot of misinformation regarding seed storage online. Cool n' dry is definitely what you want.

  6. Wrap wrap wrap and then freeze for long term storage - I've used seeds that have been in deep freeze for close to 30 years. Frozen in '84 and germinated last year. When these seeds that had been stored for that long grew I immediately grew an open pollinated seed crop to preserve the genetics and now the new batch is frozen. It is my understanding that pollen can be frozen and stored long term this way also.

The seeds were bagged, wrapped in paper towels and then bagged again and put into Tupperware. If you think that you'll be using they seeds here and there over time I would suggest getting some small ziploc bags and putting a small amount of seeds in each - whatever you feel like you'll be using each time. This way you can reach in, grab a small amount and be done with it instead of having to take them all out, figuring what you're going to use and pretty much thawing them out. Thawing and re-freezing can't be good for long term storage.

  7. I'm glad I found this because I've been wondering if it's OK that I've been keeping my seeds in my garage however the wi ter nights drop close to 0 if not below maybe not quite 0 yet but its freaking cold and definitely below freezing. Should I start keeping them inside ?
