Egg Shells in Water - Old Wives Tale or Super Hack?

Discussion in 'Growing Organic Marijuana' started by yourfriend_, Nov 7, 2015.

  1. So I heard from an OG in prison who SAID he use to grow mad amounts of weed and mushrooms and sell acid and what have you (he was in there because they pulled him over cause he was drunk and driving on a suspended license and had a pound of mushrooms on him and a couple sheets of acid; read it in his police report so him dabbling in large amounts of hallucinogens at least ONCE is confirmed..)
Anyway, this guy said that he would put egg shells in his water, and let it sit for a while and the water would draw out the protein and calcium and other nutrients from the egg shells and he'd water his plants with this. And he said it made his plants way thicker and healthier and stronger looking.. IDK if he was Cheech-Level-Fried-out or was just a story teller or maybe he was a master grower! Who knows for sure, locked up, you gotta take everything with a grain of salt cause there is no way to prove it (unless you got pictures sent in) but he seemed like a straight shooter in all other aspects (paid his debts, told the truth in situations where lying would've benefited him, help out a friend with a cup of coffee or some food)!

What do you guys have to say about it?????????

TL;DR: Soaking egg shells in the water you use to water your plants to give them some calcium, protein and other nutrients?

  2. I'm fairly sure the egg shells won't break down in water, or at least within a few days or weeks.

    Maybe months/years.

I have, however heard folks discussing both baking eggshells in the oven on low heat where they will turn to powder and also soaking them in vinegar but perhaps someone more knowledgable than I will chime in. I do know I've added them to my own compost heaps in pretty large amounts and will find pieces of them in the soil for quite a long time afterwards so that tells me that they won't just dissolve in water very quickly.

Then again time is a relative thing.

Gil Carandang has a how to on his website for fermenting egg shells for their calcium content; here's the link http://theunconventionalfarmer.com/recipes/calphos...

I just use mine in my vermicompost bins and compost piles but it would (imo) be an experiment worth trying down the road. I tend to use them more outside in the piles than my bins, as they take forever to break down like jerry mentioned above and I don't like digging them out of screened VC.

I'm most interested in his fish fermentation process. Not a fan of wasting cleaned fish bodies in the winter and I don't want to mix them into any established pile. http://theunconventionalfarmer.com/recipes/fish-fe...

  4. Thanks for the responses, instead of the egg breaking down completely do you think there would be any amount of calcium that would dissolve out into the water... I plan on buying Cal-Mag anyway soon when I get some money. I also have another question in another topic I started with a pic of one of my plants... I was told it was curling from over watering, I stopped watering for a bit it straghtened out then the tips of only 2 leaves turned brown, someone said it was light burn so I moved the lights further away but now it's showing up on another leaf with the lights further away.. I think I just need more nutrients..

  5. Egg Sheels in water i know for a fact reduces the specific gravity of the water

when making 'cowboy coffee' after boiling grounds n water and then allowing to cool from boiling point addind an egg shell or two, gently squished, not all broke up, anyway, drop in center and 'WAHLAH !!! coffee grounds begin to drop to bottom of ot and cups can be scooped from top of pot without worry of grounds and not needing filter.

but then again I'm gonna have to say if he is where he is and did what you said he did, he wasn't very good at it considering where he's AT , right? ... so yeah i'd consider the source

keep the eggshells, coffee grounds, banana peels for rose bushes

  6. And breakfast...
