Pots and Dirt and Nutrients and Newb Questions

  1. Ya'll must be starting to love/hate me by now with all the crap I ask about.

So, is any sort of pot better than another? If so, why? Obviously, folks use 5 gallon buckets all the time. Do I need to concern myself with cutting holes into the bottom of it for water drainage if I chose to go such a route? In a 4 foot tall, 26x34 inch space, 400w HPS, what size pots should I be using? I'd assume two five gallon pots or three three gallon pots? Probably go with the two five gallon pots for my first run if no one provides a reason for three three galloners being a better option, and then, perhaps, see if I can't get one massive plant from a five gallon as my growing skills improve.

Recommendations on good organic soil? Might just go with Fox Farms since it seems to be a popular choice.

Still on the hunt for nutrients. One for veg. One for bloom. Preferably organic. No mixing stuff around with anything aside from water. I got one recommendation for Ionic Growth and Ionic Bloom, which I may just go ahead and go with. Seems as good as any.

As always, I appreciate the knowledge.

  2. true organics doesn't work off one bottle for veg one bottle for bloom. you amend the soil and add a strong humus source. the microbes within the soil then break down the amendments into plant available nutrients. fox farm soil is ok but don't be surprised to find gnats in it. only way to know whats it your soil is mix your own.

  3. Spacing! It's all about the space you have that determines the pot size. Take me for instance, I don't have the most overhead space (and 4ft isn't that much after factoring in the height of the pot, the height that pot will allow your plants to grow to, and the height needed between your plants and the light to promote healthy growth) so I chose to go with 2gal pots to keep my plant size down. This obviously affects your dry weight so its a delicate balance that is specific to your grow conditions.

Fox Farms is cool, I go about 60/40 with perlite. Nothing great to say, nothing horrible to say.

Never heard of those nutes but if you email some of these companies they may send you free samples. I emailed the folks over at Nectar for the Gods nutes and after $19 shipping (reasonable considering the heavy ass box they send) I had nutes that will last me at least until the end of my first 9-10 plants.

Research chelated salts, that should give you the heads up on nutes that may not be the greatest for your plants, but that's moving more towards organic which I'm sure you will eventually want to do anyways.

My bad for all the info lol good luck!

  4. Right on Tony Starks - between a 5 gallon sized pail and then figuring in a good light and the (NECESSARY) space between the light hood and the plant - jeez. You're not looking at much of a plant height. At all.

OP, I'd highly consider reading at least the first half dozen pages of this thread - Easy Organic Soil Mix for Beginners - http://forum.grasscity.com/unknown/1116550-easy-or...

No added bottled nutrients needed. Just keep it moist with tap water...
