My version of the Red Violin.

  1. My cat died a few weeks ago. He wasn't just any cat. I had him from the time he was a kitten. 13 years. We were tight. Tighter than I've ever been with any animal, and most people for that matter. I had him cremated. Not by the vet though. I actually had a private pet crematorium do it, just so that I was 100% sure that it was his ashes that I was receiving.

So my dad has a Martin D28 guitar. That's the guitar I learned how to play on when I was a kid. After I got divorced about 8 years ago, I did (for a while, anyway) what most guys end up being forced to do...Move back in with the folks. Dick (my cat) came with me. I started playing dad's D28 again a lot. If I played my other guitars, Dick wouldn't care. But when I picked up the D28, he'd curl up next to me on the couch every time. He loved how it sounded I guess. It was uncanny though. It literally happened every time.

A few nights ago, my wife and I (I'm remarried) were watching The Red Violin. I was really baked, and I had an idea, but I figured I'd let myself think it over while sober. It still seemed like a good idea the next morning....I've always wanted to get my own D28. I remember when my dad bought his, and how proud he was of it. I was maybe 7 years old at the time. That was 30 years ago. Fuck. Anyway, my dad's D28 is hell to play. The action on it is terrible and it wears me out, but it sounds amazing. A new one runs around 6k. I thought about seeing whether or not I could have a portion of Dick's ashes incorporated into the varnish. I'd imagine I'd pay a little more, but I thought it would be cool as shit, so that's what I'm going to do. Everyone I've mentioned it to has also thought it would be an awesome thing to do, including my dad whom I'm not very close with. Thoughts?
