New grower, new setup, temp control help needed

  1. Hi guys, Getting ready to setup my first ever grow but having a huge temperature problem.

    My equipment:

    80cm x 80cm x 180cm Tent

600w MarsHydro LED (275 true watt)

105m3/h (61cfm) Exhaust fan with carbon filter

    Passive intakes

Outside room temp is around 20-23C (68-74F)

My problem is temps are not getting below 32C (90F)

So I just ran a test:

Temp inside tent with nothing on - 23-25C (73-77F)

Light on with no extraction for 1 hour 30 mins, then measuring temps - 33-35C (91-95F)

Extraction on for 1 hour with light, then measuring temps again. - 33-34C (91-93F)

It seems my light is increasing my temp in my tent about 10C, is that normal?

It also seems my extractor fan is not really removing any heat from my room, maybe about 1-2C.

So heres my dilemma do I buy a smaller light, do I buy a bigger exhaust fan or both?!

So any advice/help would be super appreciated

  2. where are you exhausting your warm air from inside your tent to ?

  3. Right now its coming out the top of the tent, but when i get it setup properly it will be going into an attic above the tent

  4. Bigger exh fan.

  5. the light is fine for the area, actually it's on the small side so definitely don't downsize that. What exhaust fan do you have? I only use proper systemair fans. Even the smallest, the 4" should easily cope with your set up. I can run 2x 170w LEDs and a 270w LED with just a 4" systemair fan exhausting the tent

  6. Had the same dilema.

Exhaust fan upping is one option but even better is air cooled lights. Bring in cold air from the outside and push it over your lights and up into the attic.

  7. I am using an LED light man so i cant air cool the light

Hey man thats the fan im using with a carbon filter attached

  9. Oops so you are.

More exhaust then....those leds produce heat afterall...

  10. Thats for sure, any recommendations on how much cfm to upgrade on to get that temp down to what i need it to be?

  11. Loads of stats online but 3-5 times a minute wouldn't do any harm.

Get your carbon filter/exhaust fan as high as you can too.

On bad days a few coke bottles of frozen ice in front of your fans will help cool things too.

  12. if you are just extracting the hot air back into the same room that your tent is in that will most likely be your problem. You need to vent it into another room or outside if you can.

  13. There's your problem. They are total shit. They can't cope with ducting and a filter.

Forget cfm ratings. Once you attach ducting and a filter they are meaningless. A quality fan will handle load better than a low quality fan, even if their cfm is the same without any load.

Plus those things sound like a jet engine. They are bathroom fans and not really suitable for our game

Just wondering how you're getting along with this?

I've been setting up my first grow this week too - and have battled temps up until yesterday.

I had a tent with a 360cfm requirement. Had a 400cfm exhaust fan with insulated ducting (in a straight line except for 1 90 degree bend). I had excellent negative pressure... I tried 2 intake fans, 3 passive intake vents - and I was exhausting air straight outside and trying to suck cold air back in with the active intake fan.

Included with this, I had a 6" fan pointing at the 600w HPS, blowing heat away from the bulb towards the filter - and had a 1mtr oscillating tower fan on its highest setting.

Still couldn't get lower than 31 degrees C with the lamp 4ft away from thermometer!

Went in the hydro store, willing to buy an air cooled hood or cool tube - and the guy insisted that I get a better intake fan instead. That didn't work! Maybe the air cooled hood would have.

Anyway, I got an A/C unit. It has an 11.3k btu + built in dehumidifier and heater.

With this cooling the room outside the tent, I was still a couple of degrees too hot - so eventually got insulated ducting for the A/C exhaust and got some regular aluminium ducting to feed the A/C cold air straight to the active intake fan.

Last night, finally, this brought my temps to a steady 25-26C, with the lights down to 2ft away from the thermometer.

Considering that it's in a cold room (cellar) and is exhausting and intaking from OUTSIDE and it's cold outside, I wasn't expecting to have to go these lengths - but there you go! Finally began germination last night now.

Good luck - and hope you get yours sorted [IMG]

  15. I agree, I think you said 61 CFM, it's just not enough especially with a Carbon filter attached

  16. Haha man that was a cool read basically the same as me, but I had to go to a little less effort lol.

Your room is alot bigger than mine though, yours is a 360cfm requirement and my room is a 37.5cfm requirement!

I upgraded to a 160cfm rhino fan 4" and it gets my temps down perfectly, I can also control them by opening/closing my window to let warmer/colder air into the intake.

Sounds like you went to alot of effort to make it work!

Goodluck man hope it all goes well!

  17. Glad you got it sorted :)

Thanks. Two (out of 4) of mine have emerged from the soil. Just anxiously waiting for the other 2 to pop now!
