I'm finally going to be germing my seeds in rockwool after being in preparation for my first grow since August. There's a lot to learn, as you all know, but I think I reached a point where it was time to get my hands dirty. Well, not dirty. This is hydroponics. Time to get my hands wet.
I hope to update with pics as I go. For now, I'm just soaking some rockwool in 5.5-5.6 distilled water before I pop the seeds in.
I welcome advice and suggestions as I bumble through this. If you stumble across this journal, and you notice something, feel free to point it out! (Except the superponics bit. I didn't understand all of the concepts when I was shopping out pieces for this project. After setting it up, I'm pretty sure I can already make something better suited to my needs for a fraction of the cost

  2. Good luck mate. Is this your first grow?

  3. Yep, it's my first grow of any sort! I'm expecting hiccups. I'm just crossing my fingers that between myself and all the info available on this forum, I'll be able to adjust and adapt well enough to have a first harvest at the end of this!
I'm aiming for SOG, but I may do a little LST or topping, so it probably won't be a true SOG

Hopefully I can figure out how to upload pictures from my phone soon too, not that there's anything to see yet

  4. You are much braver than me!!! I wont attempt hydro until I have a good number of grows under my belt.
Best of luck. I will follow along.

  5. Got to start some where

  6. Ok, 8 seeds in rockwool. I went ahead and put the rockwool in the clay rocks, then added water until it's touching the clay, but not quite the rockwool. Hopefully the air pumps from underneath will keep the rockwool damp. I'll keep an eye on them in the mornings for now.

Even after just a couple hours, I'm having to resist the urge to peek at the seeds. I hope it doesn't take long for them to pop!

  7. Took my first peek at the seeds. Can't see much inside the rockwool, but I noticed I dropped them way too deep. I left the holes open, but they're in a lightproof tent. If I have to, maybe I can cut some of the rockwool off the top.

  8. Took a peek into the rockwool, and I didn't see any progress. Thinking the rockwool might be too waterlogged, I drained some of the water in the reservoir and shut off the air pumps. I can mist it periodically if it starts getting dry. I'll feel a lot better if/when I start seeing them shoot up!

  9. Looks like at least one of my seeds is popping. Told you I dropped them deep lol

  10. Checked on them before lights out. Most of them are looking pretty good! The taproots are orienting themselves down. There's one of eight I haven't seen progress with, but I also can't see into the rockwool on that one very well either

  11. KK,

I came here beacuse of AllIdoistalk. I would like to wish you the best and have fun with your grow. I am a noob myself too and am doing a virgin grow. Hope you don't mind I will check in from time to time.

  12. Nothing new to report. I woke up late today and only had time to unzip the tent and poke one of the rockwool cubes. It didn't feel waterlogged by any means. But it felt just a tiny bit damp. I debated running the top feed system for a minute, but I didn't want to overwater. But now I've spent the whole day at work stressing about the seeds going without any water. How will my poor babies survive without me!?

  13. ugh... Rough couple of days at work plus mandatory overtime left me with no time to care for my seedlings, and it showed. Got home tonight to find the rockwool bone dry. Sawdust and cardboard. I'm going to do my best to salvage this thing, but this has not been the start I was hoping for.

  14. Still no progress this morning. I'm afraid I killed them. Feeling pretty dejected. Any opinions on how long I should keep trying to nurse them along?

  15. Bone dry? When was the last time you watered them?

  16. If they're dead ditch em and get back on the horse with the next crop. //static.grscty.com//public/style_emoticons/default/smoking.gif

  17. Hydro isn't as difficult as some might have you believe. I started in hydro... First grow was in deep water culture bins and pulled out 1 1/4 lb off three plants. Soil has its own limitations and problems as does anything. Dirt will dry out like anything else, if you are at work for long hours. For new growers, dirt is particularly problematic because it's easy to over water, or starve your roots of necessary oxygen by over-watering that particular medium and just as easy to under water.

You can also grow in a soilless medium, which is treated more or less like hydro and is very difficult to over water, but will also require more frequent watering. The nice thing is it's not hydro and therefore you can move your plants around or whatever just as you might with soil.

Seeds barely need to be in that rockwool. 1/4" at best! Hope they made it!

  18. Well I only have 2 seeds left after buying a 10 pack. Plus 10 mystery seeds from Nirvana. The smart thing would be to do one practice run with the freebies. But I have no access, legal or otherwise, to the product I'm looking to produce! So I'm eager to end up with something I'm know I'll enjoy smoking/eating. The mystery seeds could produce damn near anything of either gender! Sigh...

So how many rockwool cubes am I going to start soaking tonight? 2 or 8? Once I make up my mind, I'll do it lol

  19. I had watered them that morning. But this was the second time that happened. So I set a timer on the top feed to run every 6 hours for now with my fingers crossed.
