Question about seeds

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by InfinitiG35, Oct 4, 2015.

  1. I have almost made my decision on what seed to purchase for first time grower. I will most likely be growing in a small box, not sure on size yet. But was wondering if anyone has used these seeds and how did they turn out. I smoke about 1 1/4 oz a month. So I'm wondering how many I should grow at a time and what I should expect out of this seed ?

  2. Depends. I mean you could plant in a five gallon bucket and pull 2 zips if you know what you're doing. Or you could plant in a 2-3 gallon and pull an ounce.

Lighting plays a huge factor. If your funds are limitless, get a tent (the whole shebang), hid/hps cool tube carbon filtered properly ventilated CO2 supplemented thing of beauty. Or a cardboard CFL hot death box if your funds are tight.

If you haven't figured you're setup out, you're ahead of yourself. If you have, let us know a little more and maybe someone will be able to realistically tell you what to expect.

  3. Buy a 10 pack and grow 2-4 at a time. Expect an oz at best with autos. Being a newbie expect more like 1/2-3/4oz per plant

I plan on building a cabinet big enough for 2 plants. 3 gal pots with 4 26w cfls per plant. I have 2 120mm fans. I'm still unsure what to get as far as nutes and soil goes. Hope this helps a bit.

Edit: would I be able to start the plants a month apart and veg and flower in the same cabinet with different lights on each side or would it not be a good idea.

Don't know if those CFLs will get you what you want though. I personally just made the switch to led.

If you're going to run those CFLs in an enclosed space, you will need at least 3 more fans. I would double up on the 120mm fans at the exhaust. One fan strictly mounted at the lights to blow heat towards the exhaust. Another to blow cool intake air up through the canopy from the bottom of of the box.

Shit, might as well throw another 6" fan fan somewhere else wherever you see fit. The more the airflow the merrier.

I'm actually doing exactly what you mentioned. Starting autos about a month apart, but I'm under led so I only need one type of light. I might supplement with all these damn CFLs I have lying around now lol

  6. I've never actually looked into led mainly because im new and never planted a damn thing in my life lol. You think if I had a somewhat bigger box then my plants say 4.5ft tall and roughly 3ft wide would it still get as hot?

  7. I normally pull about 2.5 - 3 oz dry from each auto under decent lighting. Skunk is a good yielding strain in the photo version so I would expect the same from an auto.

  8. Right like I said im looking to get about 4 oz in 4 months. My mother starts cancer treatments and I think I've got her on the path to trying chronic for bad pain. So will need enough for the 2 of us.

  9. At that size, you should def be looking at another lighting method. That's a shit ton of CFLs. You're on track with how much you can pull off a plant that size, but you're underestimating what it'll take to get it there.

Bigger boxes just take longer to heat up, but they do eventually get there without proper ventilation.

  10. if you are going to run over 200watts on CFLs you may as well buy a 250w HPS. You will get double the yield and make it a lot easier to get your required amount of bud.

Or you could get a 300-350 LED. These usually use about 170-200watts. All options will need proper ventilation.

Messing about with small boxes and CFLs work for a few grams if you have no income, but if you want an oz per month you will need a proper set up

  11. I wouldn't personally suggest trying to support two people, one of them being a cancer patient on a cfl grow. If you smoke 1.25 oz per month, then you need at least a qp just to prevent having to buy for yourself any more. Adding in another person, and I would be shooting for closer to 1/2 to 3/4 pound per harvest. If your mom doesn't want to smoke then that means making edibles or concentrates, which take quite a bit of flower to make anything potent enough. Running six autos under a 600w hps I normally get the 2.5oz to 3 per plant mentioned. If I were you I would run at least 400w of hps or 400w of actual led wattage. 1/2g per watt is easily obtainable so unless things crash and burn you should be able to get about 8 oz of dry harvest.

  12. So I have made my mind up. I'm just going with a tent 3x3x5 and either 400w or 600w hps

  13. if you get a dimmable 600w you will be able to switch between 250w, 400w, and 600w with the same bulb, so great if you get some heat issues in the summer, or when you can crank up the watts in the winter.

An air cooled hood will be needed for just 5' of height, and I'd go with either a couple of 5" exhaust fans, or a single 6", depending on how you prefer to set up your carbon filter

  14. Hi, everyone's advice is sound and on track.
Cfl's are amazing but led's are better and less heat. Both though are really no good for flowering just side lighting and even at that, it's a bit of a waste.
I have just discovered corn bulbs, look em up on ebay. Get the normal e14 fitting if your putting in normal household lampholders or e40 if in a cfl (grow light) fitting. They are so much stronger than either version of cfl and cheaper with less draw on electric. Be sure to obtain at least the 32w however 65w+ would be more than you need.
That one little bulb can veg all your girls for a few weeks but then you will need either a stronger led lighting system or just get the 600w n tent like you plan. Don't get the 400w, thats also a bit of a waste especially being so close in price as the 600 and not as effective. if 600w is too mch heat and leccy, then opt for a 250w which easily surpasses a 400w.
A 140w Corn bulb can be had for $117 http://www.ebay.com/itm/Power-30W-40W-50W-70W-100W...
For you and your mother, 4-5 plants under a single 600w would yield enough but I'm not sure if you will hit expected targets first time round however, yes, the planned setup should be sufficient.
As for seeds, don't buy those expensive ones yet and if you have, don't use them for your first run, buy cheap and cheerful for now and learn the basics without expensive overheads. Try something like this for your first run https://www.cannabis-seeds-bank.co.uk/royal-queen-...
Do you know what technique you plan on using for germination?

  15. Thanks for the advice on the light I'll look into but I think I'm pretty set on the 400w, I have yet to look at the 600w though. I will be using the paper towel method then transplant into 3 gallon. I had 4 bagseeds but k would rather just pay the money to get a good seed. I plan on planting just two seeds for the first go around to learn. I'm still in the process of buying everything so it'll be s few weeks till I get everything, I'll continue with my research until I'm ready to rock!

  16. I haven't even began my research on the circulation of air or carbon filters. So not sure at all what I'm going to do there yet. I've read some post say there's a cheap diy Walmart carbon filter I may look into.

  17. one thing I have learned about cheap carbon filters is, they don't work. I only use rhino pro, they are the best and the most expensive. They work, and work for over a year. No other filter I have used has ever made it past 6 months.
Depending on your country. There may be one or two other brands worth using. Phresh filters are popular in the US. But I have never seen them for sale here in the UK

  18. Yes I'm going for the 6inch inline fan with carbon filter from Ipower. Read nothing but good things about it
