NEVER buy weed off Craigslist The most convincing scam ever

Discussion in 'Real Life Stories' started by GreyLion, Sep 30, 2015.

  1. So here I am, first post on GC. Call me Grey, or Lion. I'm here with a serious warning to all newbies or even people who think they're experienced enough to avoid scams (like I did.)

I was planning on finding a dealer off Craigslist. I'm from DC, and it's legal here, but you can't legally buy it, so it's pretty hard to come across. To get around this, most people phrase online ads as "donations". I was planning on picking up a half ounce. My current dealer is crap and keeps ripping me off or giving me terrible sketchy shwag. I'm not nessecarily a guy who knows fellow stoners and everyone I know just goes to my current dealer...the reason I smoke is to medicate some serious anxiety and paranoia. This will become more ironic as my story goes on.

I found a guy on CL with the same area code as me who seemed very legit. He made sure to get to know me first and even told me a funny story of a creepy guy he met up with the day before. He sent me pics of the product he had, and when I placed my order through a moneygram machine, sent me a picture of the half ounce with my phone number written on the bag. Some really nice looking Blue Dream. There was no reason for me NOT to trust this guy! Ended up paying $110 . He said he was on his way and that he'd drop it off in my mailbox. Even asked if I'd like to inspect the weed before he left.

The night he was supposed to deliver it, he didn't. Said there was a complication with the moneygram machine and that it's happened before with clients. He told me to resend the amount via and he'd refund the Moneygram amount to me when he met up with me. The stupidest decision ever, I did what he said. This wasn't a normal scammer--he was incredibly convincing. Once I sent the payment through WU, I became more and more anxious...this whole ordeal has totally exhasperbated my anxiety and depression when I was looking to pick up some quality bud that would RELIEVE that.

Anyways, the guy texts me and tells me that he'll have it in my mailbox by 8:00 the next morning and to not worry. I told him earlier I was 18 and he said he'd understand why I was stressed out and was very apologetic and friendly...this evil fuck even said "Sweet dreams!"

Come this morning, I text him and ask why it's not there. Leave for CC and have been depressed and anxious all fucking day. He has blocked my number from texting or calling him. Call and Moneygram and they tell me they can't refund my money because it's already been picked up. For both amounts! I basically wasted money for an entire ounce...lost 220 dollars I couldn't afford to lose.

I feel like a giant idiot and I have been so stressed and feelin like a complete dumb shit. Reverse google image searched the photos he sent and nothing came up...these were his pics, so why did he short me like this? Wait all morning for a response hoping something might've happened to the dude instead of admitting I'd been had. This was the most convincing scam ever. Even told the guy it was for anxiety and he assured me that his bud would relieve my pain.

So that's it, NEVER buy weed off Craigslist.

Anyways... here I am. Almost had a panic attack earlier and could REALLY use some bud... :(

  2. sorry but that doesn't sound like a "convincing" scam whatsoever. moneygrams are the number one form of payment that scammers use. craigslist works the same for anything, go meet the person, see the product and pay cash.

  3. Well I can see your point but remember not everyone on Craigslist is going to be like this scum bag, but just to be safe never buy off of anyone on there again. I wish I could spare some bud for you I honestly do but sadly I cannot. :c We just have to chalk things like this up to experience and move on with our lives.

  4. Yeah....Really seeing that now. I guess I didn't really have any idea of that reputation considering my experience with moneygram has been sending it to family...Still super convincing just the way he talked to me and shit. Maybe I'm just a dumbass. Kind of just needed to vent because it's not like I can do anything about it.

  5. I know, in fact the reason why I even tried it was because my friend in NY did it and found a great contact...just my luck. I guess I'll just stay with my crap dealer for now.

Ouch man, I'm really sorry to hear you lost that much.
Craigslist has always been too sketchy to me.
I knew somebody that tried buying a used car off of there, sent the money online and everything, and then bam the people vanished.

And they've got to be convincing, otherwise it wouldn't work. So don't feel fooled. I've half fallen for dumb sh!t too.
I can't think of anything you could do, besides keep an eye out for similar looking posts, then report them. But it's probably just best to cut your losses and try not to let that happen again.

If it's somebody you have the ability to see like that day, like if they're in the same town, then there isn't any reason to do the transaction online.
I would of right away been, "Ehh, no man. You can meet me at _______ @ __:__ or no deal."

  7. That sucks man but it happens...I gave my old best friend 800 bucks who knew not to give money before having the weed but gave 1600 to this dude anyways who slipped out the back of some apartments...I was so pissed and he never paid me back so we just quit talkin...live and learn

  8. I kinda feel bad for bringing this up, but I feel I have to.
Doesn't this guy now have both your home address and cellphone number?
    And probably email too.
If anything, I'd change your cell number if possible.

If this guy is crazy, this may not be the end of it.

  9. I used an oldass cellphone that's hooked up to Florida in case it was anything sketchy so he doesn't have my cellphone but he DOES have my address. I feel stupid giving it to him but I don't really care too much because I'm 100% positive he's never even going to think of me again...just that I'm one of the idiots he got money out of. The moneygrams were hooked up to someone in Virginia not DC. I wish I could report his ass but what the fuck could I say to the police LOL This guy ripped me off when I tried to buy something illegal

  10. Hah yeah I was going to say something like 'If you see a similar post on craigslist that could be him, inform the authorities"
But then I realized, well that probably wouldn't end well.

  11. Anyways.....who wants to hook me up in DC??? LMAO

  12. I honestly can't believe you sent him money, not once but twice!

Well if òne thing mate. Its learnt you an expensive lesson.

  13. Yeah just send me $500 in moneygrams, send it twice too because it doesn't always work at first.

  15. Craigslist wasn't your problem..you gave people money without having product in hand...you effed up worse by doing so via a well known scam vector, WIRED FUNDS.

  16. i had one, non weed related experience on craig's list, to buy a laptop ....yeah...sketchy is a word for it...think it was a setup for me to be robbed...thankfully i brought people with me along for the ride....

i would not do craig's list for a weed connect, not for love of weed or money...

  17. Oh I'd have to agree with that he might try something but then again he might not.

  18. About 3 years ago, a couple of friends and I got on our local Craigslist and were able to successfully scoop an ounce of mids for 60. Was really sketchy but everything went smooth. We kinda did it for shits n gigs.

  19. Pretty much you should never trust anyone online to buy weed from. It is fairly obvious, but you are 18. They aren't going to trust you enough to send it to you first, and you shouldn't trust them enough to pay them before getting any weed. So it is basically an impossible situation that you should never even bother with. Meet people, talk to them, ask them if they know where to get weed and want to smoke once you know them decently.

  20. Don't trust strangers. Don't trust anyone. Not even your mother.
