Before anyone says that if I was 18 I should just go to head shop, I am 20 and already have a nice bubbler and I don't need to buy another piece. I just enjoy making things and my bubbler gets old sometimes. Anyway here is my "bong", powerade bottle with a sharpie highlighter as downstem with hot glue to seal it and my little ass pipe as a sort of slide. Does it seem like it is safe to smoke from?
Well I'd go ahead and use it. But, not sure if the smoke would be hot enough to start making the plastic in that downstem start giving off its glorious toxins lol. Aslong as its not your main piece I think it'd be alright. Maybe only take snappers out of it so it doesn't get too hot. At least you used a glass bowl instead of a socket and a foil screen haha. Puddleglum does have a good point though...
NO! down-stem is PLASTIC... PLASTIC PLASTIC! do not smoke out of plastic, do not use plastic in contact with heat from burning/vaping herb....
I mean I know burning plastic is unsafe but I thoroughly washed the highlighter and the bottle. Plus the bowl is glass and just smoke is going through the highlighter which shouldn't be hot enough to melt the plastic at all. This is just for fun too as I said, it's just for the novelty of it because I like making random stuff.
plastic doesn't have to BURN to give off poisonous vapors...using plastic as a down stem WILL expose it too enough heat to poison whom ever smokes from that.
For fun and a one time thing, yeah I guess it's alright. I sure as hell wouldn't use it though. Just be careful not to use it more than like once after a bowl hit, or then you might have a problem with the plastic. If it's just for "the novelty" of it, then that'd imply you do have a glass bong? Just do the same thing, use your pipe as a bowl on the glass bong. Smoking + Plastic = Bad

I get what your saying and I understand there could be a health risk just from the smoke touching the plastic. If this is true how come everyone says GB's are safe, the smoke touching the plastic in a GB is just like in this homemade bong.

I didn't say I was determined to poison myself. I want to use this "bong" because it is fun to make these things. Clearly if I was sure that it is bad for me, I wouldn't do it.
i have a few different kinds and sizes of down stems and the different bowls that go with them. it is far easier to make a bong out of something if you at least have a proper down stem and bowl. local head shop should have a small selection and some smoke shops have a selection of odds and ends as well. you could of course order something like that on line. ut why do any of that when you could go to the hardware store and go strait up ghetto modified! local hardware store should have an isle with brass fittings. you could make a bowl and down stem out of the brass fittings they have. we used that for econo bongs and party bongs. costs just a couple of bucks for the fittings themselves so over all the price is definitely right! you might look at the pvc and abs plastic pipe and fittings as well. you can make a bong that is nigh indestructible!
I used to smoke out of plastic bottles back in high school I do not see any harm in smoking out of it a few times. Don't use that as your main smoking device & smoke out of it 7 times a day though.
