Is it possible to fail a drug test if you passed an at-home test?

  1. So I got a job offer from Wal-Mart, which is good. The problem is I've had no other job offers, and I am kind of worried I may have failed the drug test.

Up until the 31st of August I was smoking pretty much every day for a few months. I wouldn't say I was a very heavy smoker though, I probably smoked half a gram a day, maybe a little more or less. I'm not exactly sure since I'm not very experienced (the first time I smoked was like 7 months ago), but . Anyway, after that I smoked very little up until the 8th, and then is when I realized that a lot of places do pre-employment drug tests. For some reason all the places I've worked previously didn't do them so I wasn't really aware it was a common thing. So on September 11th I took an at-home test from Walgreens first thing in the morning when I woke up, and I passed. The line was kinda faded but it said that was ok.

My Wal-Mart test was on the 16th, so by then it had been a little over a week since I last smoked. I hadn't had very much water and I also hadn't gone to the bathroom yet that day, though I did drink more water before going over to take the test. I'm just worried because they haven't called me yet. Wal-Mart made it sound like they'd call me whenever they had the results from the drug screening and background check, which they said would take 24 hours, and it has been 2 full business days so far.

Honestly I'm probably just freaking out over nothing. I can't imagine that, given the amount I was smoking, and that I passed an at home test 5 days before my drug test, I still somehow failed it. People keep telling me I probably just need to wait a bit longer for them to call back. But I just wanted to ask here to get a more experienced opinion.

Call the Hr person at the store you applied for and ask about the status of your background check. Most of the time they will be more than happy to tell you what is causing the delay of why your background failed if that is the case.

Even if you had quit cold turkey on August 31st you could stil have problems 16 days would be a quick detox time for a habitual user.

And yes the quick test have been known to be bad before. It entirely possible for you to take a quick test one day and pass and take one the next day and fail it. They get bad batches of test sometimes or outdated test. One of my old smoking friends is a regional manager for one of the major testing companies so we get free quick test and have seen weird results more than once.
