Leaves Turning Yellow-Nutrient Burn, Nutrient Deficiency, Something Else?

Discussion in 'Sick Plants and Problems' started by Arowynn, Sep 4, 2015.

  1. Hello! This is my first post here on Grasscity and I am hoping that you awesome people can help me am figure out what is wrong with my

plant. I am a very new grower, and honestly cannot tell what exactly is wrong with my plant (or even if something is actually wrong). The tips/edges on some leaves are yellowing and her cotyledon are almost totally yellow. I went to visit my parents for two days right before starting this plant and left my husband in charge of taking care of the month old plant I had growing and he overheated/dried her out by turning on all of the lights in my grow box and not misting or watering her. I don't want to lose another plant.

I filled out the form for helping to diagnose sick plants. Sorry that it is so long. If you need any more details or have any questions please ask.

    Here is my completed form:

What type of medium; soil or hydro?
I have her in an organic soilless mixture right now made up of peat, vermiculite, lime, and "organic wetting agent."

What brand and type of soil?

She is currently planted in Jiffy Natural and Organic seed starter mix. I had her in Miracle Grow's Moisture Control until Monday, but after being told that the nutrients in Miracle Grow's soil often cause nutrient burn and having problems with the soil retaining too much water for too long I decided to repot her. The only organic/non Miracle Grow product that my local store had left in stock was the starter mix and I figured it had to be better than risking rot root and nutrient burn. I can repot into something better if need be, I just am worried about transplant stress.

    Indoors or outdoors?

She is being grown indoors in a homemade wardrobe grow box currently. It's nothing much, just part of an old wardrobe/chest of drawers
lined with mylar camping blanket. I have two computer fans going at full speed to push out air to try keep it cool in there. I just bought a 48"x24"x60" grow tent so that I can get her switched into something better suited for growing in. It is supposed to arrive tomorrow.

    What strain?
She is a Heavyweight Seeds Fast and Vast.

    How old is the plant?
I put her in the soil on August 22nd and she sprouted the next day, so almost three weeks old.

What type of lights and how many watts?
I currently have two 150 watt equivalent (42 actual watts, 2,650 lumens) CFLs turned on in her box for a total of 5,300 lumens. I have a total
of 9 light fixtures with 150 watt equivalent bulbs installed in my grow box for a total possible lumen amount of 23,850. I'm afraid to turn on too many lights and have her die like the other plant did. I have the timer set for eighteen hours on and six hours off.

    How far from the lights?
The lights are about two inches above her.

What is your watering frequency and source of water?
I moistened the Jiffy mixture before replanting her Monday, and have not directly watered since. I have been lightly misted nightly before the
lights are shut off if she feels dry with plain tap water that has been left to sit for at least twenty-four hours.

What, how much, and when was it fed? NPK?
After transplanting her on Monday I began foliar feeding her with a mixture of Alaska Fish Fertilizer (5-1-1) and UltraGreen Plant Starter which
    contains the follow:

    Boron ([IMG]
    ................................................... 0.020%

    Iron (Fe)
    ...................................................... 0.125%
    0.125% Chelated Iron (Fe)

    Manganese (Mn) ..........................................0.125%
    0.125% Chelated Manganese (Mn)

    Zinc (Zn)
    ...................................................... 0.125%
    0.125% Chelated Zinc (Zn)

I decided to start feeding her because there is no nutrients in the jiffy seed starter mix, and to reduce transplant shock with the plant starter. I mixed the fertilizer/water solution at 25% of what the bottle recommends to try to help prevent nutrient burn. I mist her in the morning before the lights are set to switch on.

What are the temps and humidity in the room?
I am not sure to be honest. I have a humidity monitor, thermometer and 3in1 moisture/light/PH meter arriving tomorrow with the grow tent.

    What size pot?
Her current pot is 10 inches in diameter.

    Any bugs? Look real close.
    Nope, no bugs at all.

I'm sorry that the attached photos are of such poor quality. My cellphone camera is subpar and I can't
find the charger for my DSLR. I can try to take more/better pictures if anyone wants.

So, what do you guys think is wrong with my plant? Too much nutrients? Not enough nutrients, something else, or am I just crazy and she is fine?

    Thanks!,
    Arowynn

  2. 3 weeks old, looks a little small to start nutrients I would think. Temp, humidity and Ph could play a part in that also. Nutrients and Ph could be cause, can all be fixed and be fine. Seems most suggest flushing them but you could also wait and see, and when u just water next see how it's doing. That young I'm guessing your watering maybe once a week, when it feels light to lift.

  3. Hello, I was just reading you post. I'm thinking you should pull back on the lights a little. Keep them around 6 to 8 inches away. Go and get yourself a thermometer for that room. Keep it at 80 to 87 with a humidity around 60 to 75%.
I do think you need to start nutes. Peat has like little to no nutritional value and it will start to repel water...good thing you have the vermiculite. So that being said your pretty much growing hydro. So you going to want to keep your ph in feed/water around 5.8.....and yes I would agree, you need to flush your media. I'm thinking you have a ph issue. If you where to change media..(and yes I recommend you do) I would go coco mix with perlite or vermiculite. I would also recommend you transplant in to a little bigger planter.

Thank you both so much for your replies! I just put my thermostat and humidity monitor into my grow box, and the readings are in the range Trichuk recommended, but barely. My humidity is sitting at 60 and my temperature is at 79. Should I turn on another light to try to raise my temps.

I woke up early this morning and took a trip to the closest quality garden supply store and I picked up a PH control kit and a pack of five gallon grow bags so that I can transplant her into one once I can get the grow tent up and running. My current grow box is too small for the bag. I read that grow bags are good for root development and keep plants from getting root bound. I also got some Fox Farms Ocean Forest since it is so highly recommended by so many people here, as well as a bag of perlite. I plan to mix the two 50/50 to help to keep the soil from maintaining too much moisture. Should this be okay? Also, I flushed her yesterday, and the yellowing does not seem to be spreading, so I think that helped!

I am having problems getting an accurate reading of the PH of my feed and water. I'll update once I get one, but I am pretty sure that the problem does indeed have to do with PH.

    Thanks!

Temp wise I would keep it under 80, and humidity during flower should be under 60 if not 50. During veg your OK but wouldn't let it go any higher. Don't want mold or root root.
Ph kit? That Ph meter or a drop test kit, not sure how accurate drop test kits are. Been using test strip myself and Ph always been around 6-6.4 and soil I never bother with runoff testing. Everyone grows differently.

  6. Well since your in soil, keep your ph at 6.5. Temps at 80 to 85 for veg is good...temps for flower I would keep it at 73 to 78....lol but you have a while till that comes up.

  7. Would say 80-85 a little high, have always aimed for 77 and 80 max. Ph I agree with as with flower Temp. My soil grow been in the 81-84 during veg and it to me has caused slow growth so far, I'm at or almost at 40 days and waiting for it to get taller so I can flip to flower. Last 2 grows have reached there goal within 30 days. But I am growing a regular seed that seems will be great lol.

  8. Yours isn't growing fast because you have bad genetics greaper28. Or you have low humidity in veg

  9. overwatering locking out mag...let the soil dry out completely between waterings and stop misting it

  10. No, it's under watering. Mist more

  11. Humidity around 50-60, Temp 81-85 and genetics, regular seed, Pandora's box x Dennis the menace made by Greentree (gts) believe he's shown his grows and strains here . Serious seeds I believe this was made from.

Well Arowynn, I'm looking at the obvious things, u need to transplant if u haven't already. See when it looks like u have nute deficiencies, u have too look at what u need to do. So the plant has been growing for a while in that small plant. so yes you will have deficiency because your soil is crapped out, your plant ate it all. Plus in the soil u have now, it has very little perlite, so your roots might be having a little trouble. Transplant and water with ph'ed water of 6.5 but don't add nutes yet.
P.S jiffy mix has very little nutritional value..

  13. Thanks so much for the help everyone. I took a combination of your guy's advice and my plant looks much better and is growing much faster then she was before. I stopped misting with the fertilizer water and got her into her new pot and soil mix. The PH of my tap water was pretty acidic so I treated it with PH up and now it is good to go.

    Thanks again,
    AROWYNN
