Advice needed on magnetic ballast safety.

  1. Hi guys, I am upgrading my 300w dual cfl for an Omega 250w HPS, using an Omega metal magnetic ballast. I was really after some advice and tips on safety, as that is my main concern.
I have ordered a Plug and Grow timer contractor, and planned to sit the ballast on top of a 1.5 inch thick piece of slate. I can't help but worry about making sure everything is as safe as possible. I have only used CFL's so this whole Ballast business is new to me.

Any input would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks.

  2. I've been using 2 600 watt dimable ballasts for last 6 or so years (sometimes with some pretty questionable electrical hookups at crap apartments). Never had any problems, slate should work fine. But I know how you feel if you work during the day and live alone.

What you probably want to be more concerned with is your lights, get a decent hood with a tempered/shatter proof glass cover (I've never had a light "shatter" but they can break if you have a major temp swing, or the power goes out and comes back on again). Most ballasts will re-start which can be hard on the lights. Another thing is get a few rubber mats (like yoga mats) to sit your plants on. Not only will it save your carpet/wood from water damage but its pretty much impossible to set one of those things on fire.

The hood and a good surge protector and mats should get you covered pretty good. Also never hurts to have a tiny boat/car fire extinguisher near by just in case. Most apartments have them under the sink, just move it into your grow room. : p

  3. Cheers for your input dude, I'm taking every possible precaution. Going to set up a webcam outside the tent focusing on my temperature display, so I can access it when I am not at home. Nothing worse than being away from home wandering if something is going to go wrong, I'm sure the feeling of dread will die down eventually after it's been up and running for a while.

I will look into some rubber mats, cheers again.
