Auto shop couldnt find the right color paint...

  1. How much should they charge me? It was supposed to be $800, just the hood and front panels. But it turns out the closest color they could find was almost black, so it doesn't look too bad but it's clearly two different colors, black-green and fairly dark green. And they did this without consulting me. Obviously I'm gonna get a better price on it, but what's fair? Half that, or even a quarter? It will probably be up to my negotiating skills, but I would like to know your opinion for baseline purposes.

  2. Wouldn't pay a dime until they fix the mistake.

  3. Concur with not paying until they make things right...even if it was a custom color they were matching, the GOOD shops use a computer to match colors. Granted, some of them fail miserably in prep work and there is a discernible difference a few years down the road, but from the booth, they should be spot on.

If this is an insurance claim, get your claims adjuster involved...insurance has an obligation to get you back to the point at which you were before the claim, and if there were no mis-matched panels, then restoring you means no mis-matched panels AFTER the work is done...

  4. Don't pay ANYTHING until they fix it and give you the right colour. It's extremely unprofessional that they painted it without asking.
If they refuse I would contact a lawyer

  5. I agree with everyone else. I refuse to pay if the color isn't an exact match. especially if they didn't call you to tell you before doing the work.

  6. Don't pay anything. You'll have to take it to be sprayed again if you swallow their bullshit, because mismatched panels look shoddy as fuck. Get angry dude, this isn't the service you were expecting and you don't have to take it. Do you guys in America have an office for fair trading? I'd tell them.

Well, it turns out I got pretty lucky. I got my car back yesterday and they apparently just received the right paint color. So I'm gonna give this paint a couple weeks to set in, then I'm taking it there and they're gonna paint it for me.

The best part: they're not charging me for the paint at all. I got pretty damn lucky, saving $800 and still getting the right paint job.

  8. Sounds like the shop is doing you a solid. Buy em a case of beer, theyll appreciate it.
