Outdoor seed planting

  1. So I'm picking up my seeds of an unknown strain (as of right now) sometime this week, I plan on germinating them indoors and then bringing them out to my grow spot and planting them straight into the ground, is there necessarily a problem with this? Like will it cause big problems like them not sprouting or anything? There's not much on this topic so I'm just being very weary, I'll post a pic of the soil if that will help at all.
Also I gave the soil a good drink yesterday mid day, will it need to be watered again in between now and the seed being planted?

  2. Grow season is winding down now, everythings in flower keep them indoors

  3. Outdoor is difficult if it's a gorilla grow, as you have to put up net wire to stop rabbits eating them when there young seedlings.

If its on your graden's its easyiler but I would recommend growing indoor in a closet with a 250 Watt CFL grow Light which can be picked up for about $60 and a "hippy hanger to hang the bulb in your grow room.

Hang the hippy hanger between two plant and grow with control.

  4. It's just come into spring in Australia tho

  5. You can try it and it might work. If it gets chilly at night, seedlings are prone to something called "damp off." The tiny stem shrivels up and the seedling dies.

When the plants are young, they are susceptible to rodents as well as insects.

I honestly think you'd be better off starting your seeds in containers and then transplanting into the ground when you have vigorous starts.

Then there's the issue of latitude and premature flowering. I think I would wait until Dec. 1 in Australia.

The ideal would be if you could get your hands on a good supply of free bag seeds. Then you could experiment with a few seeds at a time, and find out what works.

  6. I could put the seeds in small pots to start them out for a week or two but they have to stay outdoors and I thought during the sprouting stage they had to be in a cool dark environment or something?

  7. During sprouting stage they need to be warm with sunlight, the seed is under the soil so its dark. I would start them inside or just make small glass house for your seedlings, just cut the bottom of a large clear plastic bottle and put over the small plant or seedling and bury the bottle a few inches so it will hold up, or stick some sticks around the bottle, this will protect your seeds from the cold and small animals.

  8. Your peak vegging season is the 30 days before and after the winter solstice.. Well your down under summer.. Dec 21st.. Figure Dec and Jan are the 2 months you can be sure of vegging outside during.. A seedling needs about a month to become sexually mature enough to flower so they can go out a month sooner.. Nov 1st to plant seeds outside with no additional lighting.. Dec 1st for clones or they will flower.. Just some general guidelines for your consideration.. That early seedling will try and flower in about a month no matter how small it still is if left to it's own devices outside..
Now if your in a freeze free area you can play off season games and get in a spring harvest as well with some work..

  9. Yeah well I'd say it's safe to say that the winters are usually dragged out longer and the summers are dragged out longer too in my town, we actually get more sun than Queensland does

  10. well yeah Man if you put em in the ground straight away something is gonna eat em right up soo hey are you close to antartica is it really cold down there in winter or does it alaways stay kinda hot

  11. It's pretty cold in winter but it's our first week into spring here and it's gonna get warmer and warmer as the weeks come through, we've already had some good solid 25 degree days here, mid spring things get pretty toasty like 30-35 degree days
I'm gonna find some small pots on a local store website and tell me what you's think

Would this be an ideal pot to start the seedlings off in outdoors?
Also, could anyone recommend something to keep insects and pests away from the plant? I'm also setting up some small fencing around the soil to keep other dangers out

  13. I'm at latitude 33N so most of my advise will be good around 30 to 35 S latitude.. It's not about temps it's about hours of light the plant gets.. Further south you'll have longer days as summer gets here for you so if your down say at latitude 38 your getting closer to Nor Cal latitudes and can follow their time sets on setting out.. About a month sooner for them.. If you set out to soon you'll have early flower then a reveg and it really screws up the plants as far as I'm concerned..
On pots I start very small and transplant often.. I use square pots as they promote root branching and limit the circling found in rounds.. 3x3 inch to start.. 7 cm.. then a 5x5=12cm an 8x8=20cm and in the ground or a 5 gallon=19ltr or bigger SIP (self irrigating planter) Small pots early on help prevent the newbee overwatering your going to do.. Water well then lift the pot.. Remember what that feels like.. Now fill a matching cup with the same soil only stone dry.. Now you can tell when to water.. Let it dry out nearly all the way before watering again.. when small it could be a week or more between watering's.. Depends on temps and light.. You can actually let the plant wilt a bit between watering that being far better then a constantly over watered one..

You might have time for what's called a spring run.. That consists of vegging inside and setting out just after the last expected frost or 90 days before the first day of spring.. June 1st here so Dec 1st there.. Count back 90 days.. Oops your short about a month.. Still you can try it for practice.. Set the plant out during the daylight hours and bring inside at night and keep under light all night.. Doesn't need much as your not trying to grow but just keep it awake.. Setting in the garage with the light on will do.. I've even gotten it done with a high power solar light outside.. Just some ideas for you to think on..

This 70 lumen light will keep this tray awake and in veg past the time they would have dropped into flower outside..
