Whats the point of publishing poetry

Discussion in 'The Bookshelf' started by Deleted member 281310, Aug 21, 2015.

  1. So i am a member at this poetry website and they are having a publishing event. In this case they have two categories and are charging participants $35 to enter a single poem in one category. They say chances are your poem will be selected or they will ask you to choose another one. At the end you get 2 copies of the book. In this scenario can you tell me what the benefits of publishing is? I'm struggling right now as to whether i should bother spending that money which i don't have just to see my name in a book among other poets. Anyway i would love an answer to my question and if any of yall have ever published any poetry feel more then welcome to share the poem here and how it felt afterwards.

  2. Publishing is what it's all about, wether it be a book or just on an internet forum. If you've never published anything you've never said anything, and you're not a writer
    That's IMO

  3. So others can read it. What's hard about figuring that out. If you don't care about that then don't pay to be published.

alright i finally did it. fucking excited lol it's only 1 of my poems in the book but either way i get to read other poems. i appreciate the help everyone. here's the poem i chose

    Chances

I hear a knocking at the door
    it spreads avoidance and joyous
emotions of what could it be

most people would open the door
while others peep through the hole
but regardless curiosities at the door

probably someone I don't wanna see but what if it is
maybe a long lost soul looking to re unite
someone to bother me with troubles in the night

and most days I would care but today I've lost my childhood
I don't wish to speak to you
or you or you or the one that comes around the bend

the biggest battle I face is an illusion I've broken
between the umbilical cut and an open casket
you would think a knock at the door would be everlasting

  8. purpose of publishing? recognition

I read your poem and enjoyed it too :)

do you feel more or less accomplished if monetary gain is not received?

    (rhetoric not implied)

  10. Yeah, I know it's a year old.

The thing with the 'publishing events' some websites call them, is that they're kind of a scam. This all goes way back to the days of ads in the back of magazines. You send a poem and cash, and they send you a book or two. That seems fair. The scammy part of it is that this is a small run of books and the only people who get a copy of it are the people who sent $$$ and a poem in.

If you've got a bunch of poetry (or any other writing) you can just go to Lulu.com and self publish a book of your own.

  12. Publishing your work is a form of positive ego validation, and we all like people to tell us we have done a great job. Unless you're insane. Then you will be famous.

    Lol I'm kidding
