Average cost to start a grow op?

  1. I am looking to start a 4-6 plant grow op indoors, The grow op will either be in my closet or under the steps in the basement. I am looking to get a price range of the average cost and maybe some tips on which items to buy. All help would be appriciated, And I also plan to start a grow journal when I get up and running!

  2. I'm sure you already know it can vary a shit load depending on your preferences. You need to measure out your space that you plan on growing in to start with. You can put 1 plant or 25 plants in a 3'x3' area, it all depends on how you want to go about it.

So, best place to start is to measure out your space that you can use and you can work from there.

But, just to give you some kind of an answer, cost for that kind of space can be $50-$2000. You can build a cab with free scrap wood, grow with CFL's and make a home made carbon filter for $50 --- Or you can buy an $800+ LED and a quality tent and you're already tipping well over $1K.

You need to figure out what you're willing to invest, and your space you can use, then you can start to get some ideas about your options :D

i think an initial investment of around $200-$250 is a reasonable amount

this will not include a tent, but essentially everything else you could need to get started

HID lamp, fan, medium, pots, nutes, and maybe even a few seeds from Gorilla

  4. Would think the hid and in line fan alone would hit that 200+ range Alone. Unless going cheap with pc fans or house hold fans. Half Decent setup I would say have $500 on hand at least. As mentioned above, measure and layout the area your going to use and always set things up and do tests before planting, that way you know what heat issues you may or may not have etc.

  5. I honestly am looking to spend the least as possible because it is my second op ever and the first was pretty much given to me. I am not looking to make a HUGE investment but am looking to make a good personal use [IMG] I will try to measure the closet as soon as I get to it but if I had to guess it would be a 3' x 3' area and looking to spend roughly around 250$ max.

  6. spending "the least as possible" will give you a harvest of "as least as possible", so just keep that in mind.

A $250 budget is pretty low. But doable.
Is the closet light proof already? Are you able to cut a hole near the top for the exhaust duct? And also a couple of holes in the bottom for air to been drawn in? Cutting them in the door will be fine if you can't go through a wall.

If you can't cut for ventilation then you will need to buy a tent. You can get a 3x3' tent here in the UK for about £40 but I think they are a lot more in the US. I'm assuming you are in the US because you use $s, but I could be wrong

Depending on your height you could have a 400w HPS light in there, but I'd get a 600w that is dimmable to 400w, and 250w so you have some adjustment in both directions

  7. I am indeed in america, I am actually looking for more info about how to do it. As far as the holes and exhaust go how big of a hole/holes do you think we are talking?

  8. the bigger the light, and the lower the height, the bigger the exhaust fan will need to be, but in most circumstances a duct of between 4"- 6" should cover it. You are unlikely to need a bigger duct than 6". What is your available height?

It's good to have an intake vent of double the size as the exhaust, or two of the same size. This allows air to flow in more easily so there's less drag to slow the flow

  9. The door is probably 6 foot but they are fold open doors not your average doornob door. So when I pull it forward it folds to the side and shut it the same way, there are also little slits all throughout the door, maybe those need covered or maybe thats a good thing?

  10. I'm 1400 dollars into my box, it's 4x4 and 6.5' tall 600 watt hid and 6 inch exhaust with carbon filtration.

  11. If your not using a tent in the closet you will need to cover the slots in the folding door as it will let light in. When lights out in closet you don't want any light getting in.

  12. You might want to invest in a nice carbon filter/fan. After a couple weeks into flower with 4-6 girls they'll start to stink up the whole house also if there are slits in the door you will need to seal them up pretty well if smell will be an issue for you

  13. are you able to fit a solid door? because that's not going to allow you to fit an exhaust ducting I wouldn't think.

Slits will need to be covered up and made air tight. It's important that you have air drawn in at the bottom and flows up through the plants, and then sucked out at the top. If air can get in near the top the flow will bypass the plants and light resulting in overheating and suffocating plants. Fresh air is very important.

It would probably be better to find a different place and buy a cheap tent because it will already be reflective, wipe clean, light proof, and ducting ports in several places

  14. I think I'm going to invest in a tent sounds like the best option
