Noob- what container/pot size?

  1. I have one Green Crack clone that was gifted to me by a friend. It's kind of 2 plants in one because she cut it weird- it's like a 'V' with the connection of the 2 branches basically at dirt level. The cut job isn't the point, I'm just trying to be visual without having to post a picture.

Anyway, it's 4-5 weeks old, about a foot tall, rooted nicely without shock, and right now it's outside in a 1 gallon black pot with generic garden soil. (I'm researching which fertilizer to buy tomorrow.) Again, not the point, just info.

Weather average is high of 85, low of 57. Sunrise 6:00am, sunset 8:30pm. First frost doesn't come until mid Oct.

    MY QUESTION

So, since it's passed the first week of August already, should I keep it in the 1 gallon pot and hope it matures and flowers at a small size, or should I try to get the most out of the short time by transplanting it to a 20 or 30 gallon barrel? My thought is that the more room it has to grow in the shorter amount of time, the better....... But I'm not sure... Maybe a smaller plant would produce better... So conflicted on what to do.

don't wanna keep it in 1 gallon imo, and 20 gallon is overkill

go for 5-10 gallon and you will be fine

  3. Think it'll flower sooner if I keep it under 10 gallons? Like flower when they're supposed to- before frost?

  4. i messed up and went from solo cup to 2 gallon. i should have done a 5 gallon. i will not do any less than a 5. i dont care what i'm growing. of course this is indoors in a tent.

the pot has nothing to do when it flowers. it'll flower when days are shorter. its about light. not pot size.

  5. you said its in a "V" shape. does it look like this?

  6. But I mean, will the pot size allow it to grow enough to be able to flower---But I got it. Thank you. I found a 5 gal pot that I just cleaned out and will drill a dozen holes in the bottom.
you got it. Mine is tall and skinny tho :)

  7. oh a 5 gallon should be fine unless your growing a tree lol.

that was one of my plants. i didnt take the shell off (was scared) and it topped itself (i think) it looks just like another pic i've seen. so maybe your friend topped your plant. which isnt a bad thing

  8. 5 g should be fine since you are so late in the season. If you were going full season I would say the 15 or 20 might be reasonable but not in this case.

Awesome. I'm all set. Thanks so much.

My next question- what should I put in the bottom of the pot?

I was thinking about floral styrofoam because it would create a gap between the soil and bottom of the pot for ventilation, but roots could penetrate it, unlike with solid rocks. Lemme know what you think. Thanks again.

  10. I'm guessing your gonna soil. I don't know if it applies to soil, but I put an inch or two of perlite at the bottom on the pot. What do you mean by venting the pot? You want drainage. Not venting.

  11. Air to the soil*

  12. Dont put anything in the bottom of the pot, fill the pot with decent soil.
There is no need to attempt to add various materials for ventilation or drainage at the bottom of your pot. If the soil you are using has good enough drainage then it doesnt need extra help. If it doesnt have good enough drainage then the two inches at the bottom of the pot arent your problem, its the rest of the pot where your roots are trying to grow in crappy soil.
