Canadian Federal Election

Discussion in 'Politics' started by dankness420, Aug 9, 2015.

1. Well its been almost a week since the request of a federal election was called. The 42nd election will be the longest campaign in almost 100 years. Its going to be a long one and many promises will be made, most of which will be broken. Should be interesting to see which political party gains the most support out of the gate.

Thoughts?

The first debate Harper seemed to take a beating, most people I have talked to seem to be in favor of his actions but personally I feel its time for a new government.

Harper has been in control for nearly 10 years, its time for change.

Which political party has caught your interest?

Edit: For some reason I cant keep my paragraphs apart so I apologize in advance.
Well, where do I begin?
Stephen Harper is a cunt. He has eroded Canada's democracy while selling us out to the corporate establishment. He's muzzled his cabinet and parliamentarians and put up a wall of secrecy around himself that would make any dictator proud. His mismanagement of our democracy can only be surpassed by his fuck-up of the economy. He added $150 billion dollars of debt to our country and we're in another recession.
I could go on about his many other lies and failures and get into detail but it would turn into a rant lol. Anyone who wants to read up on what Harpers been up too should look up Party of One by Michael Harris, Harperism by Donald Gustine, and The Longer I'm Prime Minister by Paul Wells.

Mulcair pretty good. He stood up against C-51 and the "Fair" Elections act, as well as Harpers latest attempt to drag us into the Iraq War. I like the NDP policies so far, they have a decent platform and are saying all the right things. I just hope they come out with some more policies and talking points because they're starting to get a little repetitive.
Trudeau and the Liberals are humming along as well as can be expected lol. They're saying good things too and Trudeau is doing better than expected but its really a case of wait and see.
The Greens I personally hope do good well in the election, even though I don't really expect them too. I just hope Elizabeth May gets a bigger role in government because she is a wonderful parliamentarian and favors moving us back to supporting our MPs rather than supporting any one party or leader. Her observation that in current Canadian politics we elect dictators now (as in the expanding power of the PMO's office) rather than Prime Ministers is spot on. This is a problem that's been occurring for a long time in Canada but it has accelerated greatly under Harper.
Gilles Duceppe and the Bloc hahahahahahahahahahahahahaha that's all I have to say.
At this point in time (and probably in the end lol) I'm voting NDP but I am really excited for this election and what lies ahead. Also sorry for the essay but I don't get to talk about Canadian politics that much lol.

3. This election is the first time I ever in my life made a financial contribution - NDP. We both did and will again during this arduous campaign.

4. NDP has my vote, decriminalize pot and kill bill c-51? Sign me up.

5. Perfect summary of Harper and the missing years -

THE prime minister of Canada, Stephen Harper, has called an election for Oct. 19, but he doesn't want anyone to talk about it.

He has chosen not to participate in the traditional series of debates on
national television, confronting his opponents in quieter, less public
venues, like the scholarly Munk Debates and CPAC, Canada's equivalent of
CSPAN. His own campaign events were subject to gag orders until a
public outcry forced him to rescind the forced silence of his
supporters.

Mr.Harper's campaign for re-election has so far been utterly consistent
with the personality trait that has defined his tenure as prime
minister: his peculiar hatred for sharing information.

Pass it around fellow Canadians.

6. If you want him out of office, one ingenious way an old lady showed me was; vote for the next runner up, instead of all of us (those that hate him) voting for different parties and getting none of them elected, we pool all our votes into the runner up and get them in the lead.
We dont want a split majority, that would give him a chance. I havent checked polls but I will vote for sure this time around. Who is the next runner up? Is it NDP? OR liberal?

And one last question to all Canadians: Will you vote for the green party? why or why not?

7. Green party was the first party to report on that bill, so yes they also want to kill it, and they also want to end the war on drugs and legalize pot.
From their website:

4.9 Ending the war on drugs
Between 2008 and 2011, according to the Department of Justice,
Canada spent $311 million targeting illicit drugs, with a majority of
that money going to law enforcement. Most of that was for the ‘war'
against cannabis (marijuana). Marijuana prohibition is also
prohibitively costly in other ways, including criminalizing youth and
fostering organized crime. Cannabis prohibition, which has gone on for
decades, has utterly failed and has not led to reduced drug use in
Canada.
After analyzing the recommendation of the Canadian Senate's 2002
Special Committee on Drugs and the examples of strategies used by some
European countries, the Green Party of Canada has come to the conclusion
that it is time to legalize the adult use of marijuana. Furthermore,
the Greens believe that drug addictions should be treated as a health
problem, not as criminal offences.

Green Party MPs will:

Legalize marijuana by removing marijuana from the drug schedule;
Create a regulatory framework for the safe production of marijuana by small, independent growers;
Develop a taxation rate for marijuana similar to that of tobacco;
Establish the sale of marijuana to adults for medicinal or personal use through licensed distribution outlets;
Educate the public about the health threats of marijuana, tobacco, and other drug use;
Launch a public consultation on the decriminalization of illicit
drugs, considering the current high costs of the law enforcement effort;
Provide increased funding to safe injection sites, treatment facilities, and addict rehabilitation.

The old lady is right. Getting Stephen Harper out of power is the most important issue of the election. I don't believe for a second that he knew nothing about Mike Duffy and the cheque. He knew for sure because his lies have changed over and over sense the scandal began.
I'll almost certainly be voting NDP. I think they have a better platform at the moment and I respect Mulcair fighting against C-51 and the latest Iraq War. He did resign as Quebec's environment minister on principle and that's something I greatly respect. I think the NDP is the party people should be voting out Harper with. The Libs in opposition would be nice too.
If the Greens were sweeping my urban Alberta riding than I'd definitely jump on board but I don't see that happening lol. I do hope they pick up a few more seats though.

11. I tend to forget that Canada exists.

12. I guess we do too lol. Must be all the bong hits.
So what does everyone think so far? Trudeau saying he's going to run consecutive $10 billion deficits is a bold move I got to say. Mulcair hasn't really come out with anything that he's not already talked about, but I do like his and the Libs stance to take in more refugees. Harper is a twat as usual saying that this is all ISIS's fault and bombing them is going to solve the problem. This has been a problem since Syria became a failed state.

13. Carney called on Ottawa to accept 100,000 refugees -- a figure far
above what the current government and the opposition parties are
advocating.

"Act from your guts and your heart, not the pollsters
and campaign,” urged Carney, who served in the House of Commons from
1980 to 1988, and later sat in the Senate before retiring in 2008.

“Otherwise the Conservative Government should be swept out of office by a tsunami
wave of anger that your government is so unresponsive to a humanitarian
crisis of Biblical proportions.”

14. Everyone knows bombing the Middle East always solves the problem.

15. i wonder is Canada's political climate like America's?
Are all of y'all tired of your politicians also??? Do y'all feel unrepresented also?

16. Somewhat. I dont think the gap between public opinion and government policy is anywhere near as big as in the US though.

17. Whoevers in charge will most likely not change very much...did harper do that bad of a job keeping the economy going during the recession? Naw, not really... I guess fixing every fuckin road I encounter is one way of doing it...sure ain't green, looking toward the future or anything that really matter imo. He's a pussy politician who has soft hands, fuck em, he's got no balls. Trudeau looks genuine but he'll work according to his interests so he's not a great candidate...I'm smellin bullshit though what he says is better than dorkface. Haven't really looked into any political mumbo-jumbo as I'm in the states, tho my vote will most likely go green, ndp, or maaaaaybs the liberals.

18. kool. Idk, maybe Canada might be a kool place for our third home????? Still have to work on the second home first though hahahah.
