I recently got a Quartz trough and am wondering how long should I wait from when it's glowing. I know all the temps I should be dabbing at and everything just don't have he funds right now to get a temp gun.

Even people with troughs won't be able to give you the right answer. They probably don't have the same torch, and even then if they did they probably hold it at a different distance. For something like a trough or banger though, with that legitimately thick quartz give it 45-50 seconds from glowing. It might need even more depending what you mean by glowing. I'd start at 40, and work from there. You should get it within 4-5 dabs. Just remember to count how long you torched it too, and keep things consistent for the beginning. Once you get experience with the nail you won't even be counting. It's weird how you get used to nails.

Thanks man I forget the name of the company but it's got a little pig logo on the bottom. Ya I don't heat it up fast and I try not to over heat usually just in till the carbon residue fades away

It's Halen. Made by Joe Halen i believe. He's been known for his quality quartz and well made nails for awhile.

I don't think quartz can be overheated. It's just the longer you heat it, the hotter it gets, and the longer you'd have to wait for it to cool down, messing with your whole consistent low temp dab plan and trying to get used to the nail. The nail should actually look almost wet still after a nice low temp dab. Almost wet, a little dryish, but never brown and burnt up. And you don't really need to burn off everything from the last dab first, just clean it every now and then between every couple dabs. If it really is burning and smoking though, let it burn off, let the nail cool, and then reheat again for now. Get used to the timing for now. Don't just torch it for 3 minutes to clean and let it cool for 48 seconds because that worked before, lol.

  5. Should get a parti cap for it, the air injection really helps finish those dabs

  6. My buddy just made me a carb cap for it just waiting for it in the mail

  8. I would think 10 seconds on any quartz is almost too long. That is if you know where the hot part of the flame is. 10 seconds on my 4mm banger is a little long and I have to wait another 10 seconds to let it cool. If you're really curious, order yourself a cheapo infrared thermometer. I got one from harbor freight for $25 and use it for everything, it's pretty accurate for the price.

  9. So my friend got one of these thermometers, there helpful for his enail. I learned a bunch about my nails too though, it's neat.

On my banger i dab between 550 and 600. At 600 it tasted like i burnt it. Then at 550 I ended up with waste because the temp dropped too much. I heat it for 20-25 seconds and let it cool for 25-30 to get there.

And when you heat it for a short time like that don't you end up with the nail heated unevenly? All my oil just creeps up the cooler sides of the banger and down the tube when i try it. Does your torch just have a wide flame?

  10. I've recently realized my long 'one thousand' style counting is way longer than an actual second. you can go ahead and double about anything I've said lol.
