Problems with smart pots?

Discussion in 'Grow Room Design/Setup' started by The Soilanator, Jul 26, 2015.

  1. Anyone ever have problems with smart pots? For example maybe your smart pots are falling over or tearing. I've never used them so I was just wondering what I should prepare for.

  2. I am slowly changing to all smart pots, there are great let out heat in oxygen. Never had one fall over. Only been using them for 8 months

  3. What about reusability?

  4. yes, I have reused each one twice so far

  5. I'm using a smart pot in my box and am finishing my 2nd grow the pot shows no sign of wearing out and I will use it on my next grow as well

  6. I have reused mine a couple times and they work good still, very sturdy when full. The roots can grow through the fabric if its sitting in runoff water so I prop it up, that way it can air prune.

  7. Any fab pot is usually pretty great grabbed some 10gal "Root pouches" this year and there just as great as "smart pots" in my opinion

  8. hey slightly, what do you use to prop them up? thinking of doing that myself for next grow if i scrog it, i'm going to need to do that

Yeah Fabric pots to normal pots are like..

German made Car to Asian made Car

They are top of the game, You can try tear them all day wont happen.

  10. I looked at a few brands before getting Geopots for myself. The have handles, are thicker than SmartPots, and they're incredibly well-stitched. I haven't re-used any yet but I've heard of people throwing them right in the washer and after using them I don't see why they wouldn't hold up for a couple years like that.

  11. This dude knows what's up. I particularly like Geopots because they have versions with a velcro seam that makes transplanting way easier - I know I've had to slice open more than a few others in the past because the roots just loved the air pruning sides so much. That said, I'll still use Smarties or off-brand fabric pots because at the end of the day, they're pretty much the same. I just keep the transplanters for times I know I'll be moving plants out.

  12. Good to note that too. You would definitely want the velcro pots if you plan on transplanting healthy plants. I wont be transplanting so I chose the regular pots. If I had to spend more than about 100 bucks on pots though I'd grab a big roll of eco felt and borrow a sewing machine [IMG]

  13. The last 10 5gallon rootsorganics fabric pots at growershouse are best ive bought. there 3bucks each but well worth it!

  14. yeah i think they might even be sturdier than smartpots for like 1/3 the price.
I have the same 25 gal root pouches outside that wintered over for 3 years now, and they're still fine.

  15. I've tried Oregon breathers, root pouches and Smart Pots, apart from slightly different fabrics they are all the same and work very well, especially when using a wick to make a SIP. Anything above 3 gallons I would recommend you buy the models with handles
There is some salt buildup on the fabric, but nothing a little washing won't remove. I wash them by hand in my bathtub, my GF won't let me put them in the washing machine :( lol. I've been using them for almost 4 years now and the only sign of wear is the paper tag that fell off :p

  16. Awesome replies everyone. Thank you for contributing to my knowledge.

  17. 3 years now that's getting your money's worth right there lol good to know they can go that long tho

  18. While we're on the subject, anyone ever got some white deposits (whitish crust) on the outside of the fabric pots? I also get some on the top of the soil sometimes...
I'm pretty sure they are salt deposits, but I'm a bit worried that they could be some sort of mold and/or fungus...
And is it normal I'm getting that? I don't think that salt deposit is a good thing for roots...
I've always been using City tap water...

  19. Most likely sodium buildup, if you have a res and air stone. aerating your tap water for 24hrs should cause the chlorine to evaporate along with other things (better water for your plants)

  20. Ive used every brand and nothing beats a smart pot. Geo are second but are to thick and don't breath as well. The big ones are straight shit and biodegrade in a season. I use 1 gal 3 gal 5 gal 7 gal 15, 25 ,35,65,100gal and my favorite 200 gal. Anything in a 10 or 15 gallon is easily transplanted by placing on a upside-down 5 gal bucket then peeling bag off, turn it inside out. I've done this many many times. I've uses the smaller ones 15 gal and under over and over the 200 are on there 3rd season and im sure I could squeeze another although I plan to replace them. Good soil is important must drain really well or they suck. As far as salt build up on bags I pressure wash them when they still have soil in them to clean outsides of 40 gal and bigger. Smaller ones get soaked and rotated and replaced. 100 gal is half a yard so soil can be figured of that for all sizes. Hope this helps some and good luck.
