Germinating 30+ year old seeds?

Discussion in 'Advanced Growing Techniques' started by talon41ak, Jul 24, 2015.

  1. My mom recently found some pot seeds of hers from 30 years ago when she used to live in Florida, I've been growing for less than a year, and have only successfully dealt with clones. She wants me to germinate them and try to grow them, but I tried to germinate 5 or 6 jack herer seeds (paper towel method) when I first started and couldn't get any going, after 5 weeks of nothing happening I got lucky and acquired a couple clones so I haven't tried seeds again since, so my experience with them so far hasn't been good.

So are there any germination methods anyone has that will increase the chance of getting one to pop? I've looked online and found very little on germinating old seeds, the only things I picked up were a black tea soak, or a molasses soak with a low dose of nitrogen rich nutes.

Thanks in advance for the help,

  2. plain water soak for 12 hours, if they sink, cool, if not soak for another 12 hours. then if still havent sunk id say no point. if it did, / has tap root *hehe* then plant her in some lightly moist soil and wait :) once she pops, if the humidity is low or temps are hot, put on a dome or something to keep the humidity up for her, then wait :) bobs ya uncle ya gave birth to a seed son!

  3. I regularly recover old seeds, breath life into them ..get the seeds and split them with their original owner, -30 years is 1985 Jack Herer ..is mostly Northern Lights x Haze, its popular but not mind blowing stuff, nice to toke to remember the old days, but you just never know, and its worth your time doing this as you may need to do it agasin later, but with your own seeds.

1: line a jar or cup with mid range sandpaper, so the sand faces the inside

2: add the dry seeds, and shake like hell for 30 secs, until the outter shell is bumpf

3: add to a jar of ph neutral water with quarter teaspoon of household bleach, to prevent root rot and bugs later

4: keep seeds and jar warm 77F/25C until seeds sink

5: once the seeds sink transfer to your damp paper towel keep warm until the tails are half an inch long

6: then potup to your prepared pot, ....good luck
