My dog has an ear hematoma.

  1. So as the title states my dog, Red; has an ear hematoma. He is in some discomfort and from what I've read it is a fairly easy treatment at the vet. The problem is I don't have the money for a vet visit right now and the surgery would cost around 500 dollars. Are there any members in the community with veterinary experience or have treated their dogs at home for this? I could probably lance it and be done with it but I'm worried about possible infection. I would really appreciate any input or advice from my fellow blades so thanks in advance. One more bit of info from what I've read, if i leave it alone it will heal by itself but will take longer due to the dog shaking his head constantly from the discomfort. Red is just an old fat dog but he's my best friend and I hate seeing him in pain.

  2. You can take care of it yourself. We live on a farm and have taken care of various animals for years. The vet isn't always an option here either, so if you can do it yourself, we usually do. Just make sure to sterilize whatever you plan to lance it with really well. Have some peroxide on hand to boil it out with once you lance it and then put something antibacterial on it once you are finished. He should be fine. Hematoma is a fancy word for blood blister. So, if you release the blood and keep it sterile, he'll feel a whole lot better and your wallet won't get cleaned out by the vet. Just keep everything good and clean while you do it. Good luck!!
