Troubleshooting Magical Butter Machine Cannacaps for Pain Management

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by Amightystranger, Jul 4, 2015.

  1. My grandfather was recently diagnosed with late stage pancreatic cancer. I am very concerned about pain management as his illness progresses. We live in a med mar state, but I thought caps would be a good way to ease him into marijuana use rather than vaping or smoking. After two less-than-stellar batches of cannacaps, we are getting a little desperate.

A grower has been helping me try to produce potent capsules using the Magical Butter machine (MB2e). The results have been disappointing though. I really need to get this right before his pain gets bad.

The first time, he used 20.2 g. trim with 2 c. (around 418 g.) coconut oil. No prior decarb, no lecithin. He ran it through the 220 degree cycle for one hour. The resulting oil had a strong smell but was very pale and had virtually no effect.

The second time, he used 14.8 g. Death Star bud material and 6.2 g. trim, the strained coconut oil from the previous batch, and 2 Tbsp. lecithin. Following directions from the state's med mar site, he ground the bud and decarbed at 300 degrees for 15 mins. Then combined the ingredients in the MB2e and selected the "oil" setting (160 degrees, 1 hr). The results were, again, weak. So he ran the same mix at the 160 degree setting for another 2 hours. The resulting oil was very dark, but not potent.

Does anyone have experience with making potent cannacaps with the magical butter machine? Any help would be greatly appreciated!

I don't own a Magic Butter but I am reading the instructions on their website right now. They recommend to use 7-14g of material per cup of oil to make the basic cooking recipe. So that would be 14-28g per 2 cups. Your 20g is right in the middle of that range, so far so good. But this recipe is for cooking oil, not for making super-concentrated canna-caps!

If you were making brownies with 1/2 cup of oil per tray, then you'd be using about 5g of material per tray of brownie (20g/4). These would be low-to-moderate strength brownies by most stoners' standards. Cut into 12 brownies per tray, that is about 0.4g of material per brownie. (Some recipes call for 3/4 cup oil, which would be 50% stronger of course.)

If you are making cannacaps on the other hand, then you need to use much more material, because a 00 size capsule holds less than 1ml of oil. (If you are using a different size capsule then adjust the maths accordingly.) By my calculations you should be getting about 250 capsules per 2 cups of oil. So that is 20g/250 or 0.08g of herb per capsule and he would need to take 5 capsules to equal 1 brownie.

0.08g is not an insignificant dose, especially for an inexperienced user, but in my opinion it is much lower than you would need to medicate a seriously ill person. Many users on this forum (especially medical patients) use 0.5g, 1g, or even more of material per edible dose. So your grandfather would need to eat something like a dozen capsules to equal a 1g edible.

Easy suggestions = increase the amount of material per batch, and/or take multiple capsules, and/or use the cannaoil in food recipes instead of capsules.

More involved suggestion = read the linked thread below and follow the instructions exactly. If you have access to hash or concentrate, then even better: you can make the caps very strong if you use concentrated active ingredients.

  3. You can take 2 steps immediately that will help get you pointed in the right direction.

    1. Sell or otherwise rid yourself of the MBM.
    2. Go to the stickie thread called Another Tincture Thread. You will get all the help you could possibly want. There is a recipe on page 242 of the thread that should very helpful.

PsychedelicSam is very willing and able to give good advice.

  4. Thanks, puddleglum. We were wondering if the oil would be better suited to an edible like brownies because it didn't have much effect in caps. We will keep trying and I will definitely check out the linked info. Thanks so much.

  5. Thanks for the information. I will definitely look him up. Do you think the MB machine is a waste? The reviews/instructions for it seem to run the board from love to hate. I thought it was worth a try, though (desperate times.....)

  6. As an additional data point, it might be interesting to look at the recipe for Rick Simpson Oil (RSO). Now... I have never tried or made this oil myself, so I really can't recommend it or give it the Puddleglum Seal Of Approval. But it does seem to be popular with cancer patients, who claim some really remarkable results. Here is the relevant paragraph from his recipe:

I usually work with a pound or more of bud from very potent high quality indica or indica dominant sativa crosses. An ounce of good bud will usually produce 3 to 4 grams of high-grade oil and the amount of oil produced will vary from strain to strain. You are never really sure how much oil you will get until you have processed the material you are working with. On average, a pound of good bud will usually produce about 60 grams of high-grade oil and sometimes you may even get substantially more from some varieties.

    Let's check the maths.

RSO contains 1lb (453g) of material per 60g of oil. So that is a density of 7.5g of MJ extract per 1g of oil.

Your oil contains 20g of material per 418g of oil. A density of 0.05g of MJ extract per 1g of oil.

So, your oil is 1/150th the strength of the RSO used by cancer patients. I am not saying that you should make your oil 150x stronger (which would actually be impossible with your equipment and technique) but rather to give you confidence, that you can significantly increase your grandfather's dosage without worry.
