Ebb and Flow Grow Journal

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by PushGrass, Jun 28, 2015.

  1. Hello fellow growers! I hope I am posting this in the correct sub-forum, and if I am not someone please guide me to the correct place.

This is my grow Journal, my first grow with cannabis. I have had some small hydroponic gardens where I have dabbled with spinach and kale for personal use, but I was using a DWC. This is my first time growing with an ebb and flow system.

To all posters, please be respectful of others advice and recommendations. There are many right ways of growing, so if you are not okay with someones advice just post what you think works - no negativity or arguing about what does/doesn't work. We are all here to enjoy god's gift and hopefully pass some knowledge ahead to people who are new to the community - like me : )

    My setup:
-650 XML Diamond series LED light
-Oxygen pot system (ebb and flow) 8 sites with 5 gallon buckets (66 gallon reservoir)
-50/50 coco (botanical readygro coco) and pebble mix is the medium I will use when I transplant the clones to buckets
    -4x9x8 Gorilla Grow Tent
    -one oscillating fan inside tent
-225 cfm intake inline duct fan (another additional intake not hooked up)
-8" S-line Vortex exhaust with speed controller
-Canfan carbon filter exhaust (outside tent) hooked up to vortex
    -Nutes are mostly house-garden brand

To the expert growers: any advice is encouraged, I am very open to suggestions and recommendations. This is my first grow so I know I will make mistakes along the way (if I haven't already lol). I am doing this with my roommate, we spend roughly $800/month on flower and figured we could completely cover that expense within a year of growing our own. We were also tired of picking up strains we didn't like or want, and we are somewhat connoisseurs of good flower. So we want to one day produce something of our own!

The picture I posted of the Humidity dome was the first day I purchased the clones. I was very disappointed with the handling of the clones by the dispensary in CA, the bud tender didn't even wash his hands and the station they had their clones growing was not a decent setup at all! In 15 days of growing the clones they have nearly died and developed a TON of algae! Please help. I am purchasing seeds online and will probably kill off the clones unless someone thinks this is salvageable? Here is the picture I took today of the clones and the roots (lack of roots). I started a seedling prior to purchasing the clones and its roots are HUGE compared to the clones so I am not sure why they have developed this algae and deficiencies. The seedling looks absolutely amazing!! I have only started from seeds prior too, first cloning experience.

  3. I suggest you get yourself a good line of nutes(gh, advanced, botanicare, fox farm, etc) I like gh but any of those would be recommended.

  4. Bud daddy, thanks for the reply! This is the list of nutes that I'm currently using:

House and garden Aqua flakes a & b
    Botanicare cal mag
    MF NUTs
    MF Be One
    MF silica
    Orca
    House and garden roots excellurator

Do you recommend changing or adding anything to this mix? I'm using a feed chart from my hydro store which coincides with the recommended doses from the manufacturers.

  5. Those cubes are entirely too wet. They should only be kept moist. Not drenched.
    Same for that seedling.
Quit pumping water at em. Just mist them if they start to dry out.

  6. And get some white plastic, or something, to put over the cubes to block the light. That will help inhibit the algae.

  7. I covered them up with some white vinyl yesterday, so hopefully within the next few days I will see some inhibited growth in the algae. Thank you for the advice! As for watering I had them dry out too much once because I got stuck at work longer than expected. I didn't want that to happen again so had my air pump bubbling water to the cubes, but I will make sure to let the cubes dry out more. How long do you recommend the roots be when I transfer them into the buckets?

  8. As soon as you see roots. That seedling can go now.
Bubbling water at em isn't a bad idea, but I'd have it on a timer so that it only happened periodically. It's keeping the cubes way too wet as it is.

  9. Here are some pictures from last week. I wanted to let the roots develop more and allow for the plants to come back from transplanting shock, so I held off until yesterday to trim some of the dead leaves. I'll post the new pictures soon. I have also started hand watering the buckets since they are not drying fully with the small plants and Low temps (78-82), I've increased the temps to run about 84-88 to see if this will help.

Thinking about a foliar spray, any recommendations?

  10. Oh wow, you're using coco in e&f. I would have just used hydroton.
Anyway, you pry only need to water once every other day at this point.
I'm not a coco grower, but you should check out the below thread. Maybe adopt some of the ideas of the method.

  11. I was thinking of adding a higher ratio of pebbles, right now I'm using about 50/50 coco and pebble mix. You saying just pebble will yield the best results for an e&f system?

Thanks for the help and link!! Really great stuff 🏼

  12. Yes, pebbles/hydroton I do believe is best for E&F.
Great aeration, and the capability for multiple flood/drain cycles, exposing the roots to fresh air and fresh nutes each cycle without creating an overwatering condition.
