Tray with hum. Dome for seedlings?

  1. I went to my local grow shop and picked up some fox farm ocean forest, some pots, and this tray that I can put water in the bottom and has a plastic dome, with 2 holes on top for air that I can open or close. My question is should I leave the holes closed or open? Or how long each? How long should I keep them under the domes and in the little trays before transplant to 5 gallon pots? I forgot to mention I was gonna germ. My seeds in the soil naturally, keep them in dark until the pop the soil

  2. Get a temp and humidity monitor put it inside the dome. Use that to judge whether or not to open the holes. And as far as how long. Personally I've found the lid makes things a little too hot with lights over so I just leave it open For my seedlings

You want to be seeing sold roots peaking out of the bottom of your starter medium

  3. No need for dome with seeds domes are for clones.

I use a tray with rapid rooters and leave the dome on until they sprout. Once they sprout and cotyledons appear I move them in to whatever medium I am using. The only reason I like the dome for germination is because it keeps the rooters from drying out as fast and keeps heat in to help speed up germination. I keep the vents closed, but use a heat mat with a thermostat to avoid overheating.

Those little trays are only really good for a few days of good root growth. I would ditch the tray insert and germinate in cups of soil. Place the cups in the tray and the dome will help maintain moisture until they sprout. That way you don't have to go straight to 5g pots. If they are autos, I would start them in the 5g pots.

  5. I germinate my seeds directly in the final pot by using a transparent cup as temporary dome.
