New at growing and need help

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by dannysteak, Jun 16, 2015.

  1. About 6 weeks ago, I began growing a single plant indoors. I don't have fancy equipment and I don't have a huge budget. So far the plant is looking very good , I've been taking it outside for a few hours everyday and bringing it inside at night. The plant is about 10-12 inches tall. Based on its progress so far , it appears to me that the plant is female but I can't be certain. I need some tips and technics on how to have my plant bud and thrive. It would be a huge help for some pointers. I will post pictures if needed. Thank you grasscity!

  3. That's a good starting point for ya. And if your gonna lug your plant on and out, why not just leave it out and not drag all the bugs in the house. And you need to have it out for more than a few hours. It needs to be out from sun up to sun down. And only drag it indoors if your gonna flower it early. And do a lot of reading.

  4. Yes, you should really do the reasearch.  It is very gratifing to figure it out on your own.  I watched videos on youtube.  I watched Jorge Cervanez's grow dvd on YT.  You learn alot, but really the knowledge comes as you make mistakes of your own.  I just started growing and I am learning how to grow in my space...of course I know the ideal conditions, but there are things you just don't anticipate.  I am figuring out how to adapt to my conditions and money situation.  I just bought two 400W MH lamps cuz my girls weren't growing fast, but I got a steal on them.  I learned that the plants grow a lot during the flowering (they can double in size from when you start flowring them).  I must say the peeps on here are very helpful and knowledgable.  I wish you good luck!  If you have any problems feel free to ask, you will get a lot of help on here.

I'm just curious - OP came here, to Grasscity; a cannabis growing community and yet when he asks for help you direct him away from here.

    Why?

  8. I appreciate the help and I've been reading through a lot of forums for absolute beginners but I'm mostly curious on how tall the plant needs to be or how developed the plant has to be to begin flowering

Ah, I can answer that one, since I have already asked that same question.  It all depends on the lights and space you have.  I learned that the best buds are going to be the closest buds to the light.  This guy was telling me I was wasting my time the way I had it.  I was told to chop it down like 10" and I also bent it over so the branches would start to grow upwards.  Basically, the more crowns you have at the top the better.  Since it is still pretty small, you have time to top the plant by cutting just the newest leaves off the top of the plant (mine was 28" tall).  It will stop growing for a little bit until you have two tops on it.  Then when that gets bigger I would top those two branches and so on until you have a few crowns.  Also, topping the plant will cause it to grow the branches out more.  I was told if you have a Metal Halide lamp 11 or 12" above the plant that within a 3 foot diameter around the light is the sweet spot with the best buds and it goes down about 12" down the plant from the light.  You should also trim fan leaves so that the branches get direct light.  If they aren't getting direct light they will have airy and not as potent bud.  When to flower is up to you really.  It depends on the head room your girl has.  If you have 6 or 7 feet I would start to bud it at about 2 1/2'.  I have seen one grow where the guy started budding it small after about 30 something days.  Since you have one plant you should top it at least twice IMO.  I hope that helps you a little.

EDIT:  Also, I have seen people add lights on the floor or right next to the plant so that the lower branches get light as well.

  10. I always send noobs to growweedeasy...... They can do some reading there, get some very basic knowledge. That way when he comes here, we can HELP him with the more complex questions that come from having that basic knowledge. I could send him to the beginners forum, but I don't find it kind to send OP on a wild goose chase searching pages of forums. Or when he asks a question here, since he is new, who is he to believe. I find these simple questions can all be answered with a little reading and learning. And I feel, that website I mentioned has a good wealth of basic knowledge that if op takes a little time, he would probably have about 50 questions eliminated from ever being asked. Me and you both know that here, every question is gonna have a different answer from different people. So these noob questions are better off answered on his own through a source that doesn't have a bunch of people contradicting each others techniques. Since you were curious. Lol
Besides why did op come to the organics forum to ask a question non-organic question anyhow.
I give you many props Jerry... I have read and learned much from some of your posts. Happy growing good man.
You gonna hit the Santa Clara or Chicago shows? I am doing Santa Clara weekend. Just got my tickets in the mail two days ago!! :) All smiles!

    Always keep it groovy...

I've never visited groweedeasy and just like to think that we can take care of folks needs "in-house".

No, I won't be attending any of the shows. Too much going on and to be honest I'm just not a Phish fan. Different strokes and all that, but please have fun. We do still go see Phil whenever possible but our next scheduled show isn't until Oct 30 in NY.

Should be interesting shows to say the least - be groovy.

  12. I'm going to chicago! First and last show for me!

I like phish too, but I'd never say it out loud, I have friends who would beat my ass for it xD lol

  13. These are just a few shots of the plant, it's still young and has a lot more time. I can't that you all enough for the guidance , it's much appreciated

  14.
I'd think about putting it into a much bigger container of GOOD soil pretty quick...

  15. Oh yea, and let me emphasize what jerry said, good soil.  I tried using walmart crap and now I got gnats in my soil.  You should try fox farms soil.  I am transplanting and watering it with mosquito dunks.  But, hey it looks good man.  Seems like it is very healthy. Have you thought about topping it?

Yeah. Bigger pots. And not those clay things. Horrible. They are pourous and roots will cling to sides of pots and damage roots when transplanting if needed. Also ceramic pots outside under the sun cook the soil in a bad way...roits don't like heat. You can order on amazon some generic 5 gallon smartpots for really cheap. Or nursery pots. And no soil from walmart. If your gonna use cheap soil, at least go the Kellogg patio plus route from home depot. Not my preference, but it will work. Add lots of perlite. Ive even seen pro-mix at home depot. But its pricey..Or like gilman said, fox farms. Amend any of them with some goodies(ewc, kelp meal, lime, bone meal, etc) and pot in proper pots. And put them outside and leave them there. Stop lugging them around. Plants like to be in one spot, being able to grow itself into the available sunlight. Moving it around kinda stresses the plant as it always trying to adapt to growing a different way. Just my .02.......

  17. I wondered that about moving them around.  I thought I was being paranoid lol.

Keep us updated on the transplant Danny.  I definitely agree with Nuker, listen to what he is saying.
