Senescence

  1. So, I did not see a dedicated thread when I searched,

Does any body have any tips on delaying senescence? I have some bcga space queen plants that I have had for a couple years(cuttings from my current mother). the original plant was planted 15-16 years ago.
They generally take 14 weeks to finish, but are started yellowing out a bit early this past run, and were finished in 12. I have replaced lights, and only ever remixed with an equal portion of new 1/3 compost, 1/3 peat, and 1/3 aeration.

Would taking a cutting outside to get some summer sun increase vigor? I intend to take cuttings from a plant I take out on the patio to see if this works.

...in reply to the above the short answer is ...."No"  as cannabis is on such a tight time frame,...there is very little room on the plant for manipulating its age, once germed, photomorphic cannabis, goes thru 2 firm stages of life, .. the veg and later once the solstice has fallen thru the bud, hormones do play an important part, but as cannabis is an annual plant much play is made of seed making and growing out clones, little is made of actually trying to extend its life other than for mothers in perpetual 18/6,

Taking a 'cutting' outside to increase it's 'vigor' is dumb, as in most cases cutting/clones have no vigor .thats for seeds ...lol

ps. avoid peat, as it holds way to much nuted water and will lead to nute burn

Vostok, I found out the 1st part of what you said in Wikipedia waaaay before you tossed your 2 cents in. unless you have tried it don't say it does not work. the information comes from Shantibaba, and I wanted to know if someone not on MNS forums had tried it.
I typed peat, but I blend 50/50 coco and peat. Pretty sure its not nute burn, cuttings from my current mother just started fading prematurely the run before last. and like I said I was given cuttings off an older mother plant. I flower them 6 weeks longer than the person who gave them too me(hydro farmers harvesting sativa doms at week 8 lol). There has to be a spot where I am lacking as a gardener, or It would be able to go the full 14 like it had the previous 5 runs.

  4. Chances are the ol grey mare just ain't wont she used to be lol. I've got a friend who's mothers went herm after a few years, and that's with first gen plants it seems you have a second or third gen cutting as your mother by what I can tell from the story. It seems strange that they finish sooner/yellow off, did you change anything as far as nutes? I'd try a living soil so you don't have to flush and the plant has the same nutrients available through the whole grow and see if that makes a difference.

If all else fails get some colloidal silver and make some feminized seeds. I'm not sure how it will work using two cuttings from the same mother, some people let the plants pollinate themselves but there's a high chance of herm seeds when you do that. You could also cross it will other genetics if you have any around. Also remember anything sprayed with the silver will be unsmokable.

  5. I do have a living soil. That's why I am weirded out. everything was the same. the only things I can think to do is start blending up aloe, and spraying that mixed with coconut water to see if it helps.
lol she was probably on like 15th or so generation cutting when I 1st got it. only on 3rd mom since I have had it now.

Making seeds has been a priority since day one of growing. I never want to purchase the same variety twice. I already hit her with a blueberry hill dad, and a grape 13 dad. I also intend to hit her with some Appalachian hashplant, chameleon kush x MVTF, ancient og, tranquil elephantizer, and flaming cookie males. I don't really want to retire her. she is big, she is stinky, she is strong. Also, I am personally against the creation of feminized seeds. makes you have to purchase more seed.

Some of the 1st plants I grew were thai sticks from a cutting who'se orginal mother was planted in the late 70's and was probably 30+ generations old when I got it.

  6. I'm not sure where the peat negativity came from - it has been an important part of potting soils since man started potting plants. It is especially useful in an organic soil because of its high Cation Exchange Capacity.

OP, just because you're getting some premature? yellowing of fan leaves doesn't mean you don't have healthy plants and won't harvest fine bud. Taking plants through to finish with nice bright green leaves is almost impossible and I don't even try, nor does it bother me any more.

It it can happen using chemical fertilizers because you're forcing the nutrients onto the plant but in a natural organic soil that's just the way it is and there's nothing wrong with it.

    Its a a natural process.

  7. Jerry. These are cuttings from a variety I have been running awhile. these are recent events in my ownership of the variety. the soil has been mixed 50/50 old mix to new mix(that I blended myself) the mix is mels's mix style with added amendments (kelp ,neem, crab shell, oyster shell flour, DE,). the plants are healthy, but my trichomes are no longer done when the plant is done.I don't like the quick racy buzz it has when harvested with milky and clear trichomes., I like it more medicinal, and anxiety relieving. I keep up on my gardens maintenance so I am confused as to why this is happening.
I do not associate the color green with quality bud Jerry.I associate smells and sexy trichomes with quality.

Are you sure in your scope of knowledge you know of no other way than to upgrade my rooms to a more quality environment?

  8. if it's the trichomes you are looking to be more mature when harvesting, the only answer I have is to let the plants mature longer before harvesting - no matter what the leaves look like.

I'm sorry if this doesn't answer your question but if it doesn't could you ask again, exactly?
