Root Discoloration

  1. Getting a brownish color on the my roots and can't figure out why. Brownish color is also settling on top of both air stones. My res temps are below 70, there are no light leaks letting light into the res. The only thing I can think it may be is the botanicare pure blend pro grow that I've been using. The plant is only 10 days from sprouting through the hydroton. It seems to be growing well above the lid. Any ideas?

There are also a few small pieces of root floating around in there....is this normal?

  2. It also may be possible that my air pump isn't big enough. Could a lack of oxygen cause root discoloration?

  3. My roots pick up a little colour from the nutes, not a lot though. Do the roots smell like anything?

  4. Havent smelt the roots themselves, but the res has planty, soil smell. I noticed it after a few days of first using the nutes. I did a res change and thoroughly cleaned everything and the discoloration stared a few days after that.

Do you use the same line of nutes and get discoloration?

When I suck the solution out with a syringe it looks clearish, but when you look into the container I think it looks like its a brownish color. I'm really hoping this discoloration is caused by the nutrients as I can imagine what else it could be. I've got low temps and no light getting into the res.

  5. I use GH Flora 3-part, the FloraMicro is basically black and turns the soup a bit brown but it doesn't always stain my roots. I let my temps get a little high one day and noticed some brown smelly slime so I picked up some 30% h202 and put 1-2ml in my res each time I change it and that stopped. I also lowered the temps, but you say yours are below 70 so you should be good.
