Will the worms ive collected and put in my compost bin live thru hot summer?

  1. i have 2 vermi-composting setups,, but have decided to just collect worms and throw them in my 50 gal hand crank compost bin, i keep it stocked with food, and the rain around here has just been crazy so it stays fairly moist, there are some pretty good breathing holes and all and plenty of food, and i threw a lil extra on top just in case... anyhow the question is in the title. 100+ degrees at times...

  2. the bin is in a shaded area by trees, but direct sun hits from time to time throughout the day

  3. they are thriving right now i see them growing bigger each time i open it.

    60-75 degree weather tho..

your "crank composter" is most likely made from black plastic material, right? 10 minutes in full sun in the summer is going to cook anything in there.

I'd personally use the composter for composting and get a couple big smart pots and put them in full shade. If you don't the worms are dead meat. They'd prefer the smart pots anyhow, or at least some kind of different container in the full shade. Worms and sun don't mix.

  5. its not black, its metal pale greenish., and it stands about 4 ft high too, about 50 gal drum or so, but i will sift them out and put them into one of my vermi compost bin.. i just hunted down about 100 of them, been raining like hell so i just raked some leaves back and boom caught like 50 earthworm jims,  tis what i call the big ones..

  6. I agree with Jerry and believe me, I have killed many worms to my shame. I'm a perfectionist so that's why I put that in there. [IMG]

  7. I can't say anything about direct sunlight but I left a bag of nice compost in a bag, inside a sealed rubbermaid bin for about a year (in my apartment, but in the summer it gets very hot in here) - I opened it up after a year and basically found the worms thriving, the compost is practically all EWC at this point. I made a worm bin and tossed the whole bag right in there and now have tons of worms!

  8. well this rain has really made these trees put on some foliage its shaded most of the day, i've been working alot havent quite had the time to sift them out so i just took the lid off and and have been keeping it moist, and feed of course... stuck the shovel in it and saw a smaller one alive so im guessing so far they are all alive still.

  9. Just remember that worms like about 85% moisture which is fairly wet.
