How do I counteract weeds negative effects on sleep

Discussion in 'Seasoned Marijuana Users' started by thatjames1130, May 22, 2015.

  1. Hey guys, I'm kind of new to this forum, so I apologize if I missed a thread covering this topic already.

So I've been smoking for quite a while now, pretty much every night before bed. Usually the next morning I feel fine and well-rested. However, sometimes I wake up and feel groggy and sleepy the entire day.

I did some reading and found out that marijuana disrupts REM sleep, which explains lack of dreams for some people. Smoking before bed doesn't always make my dreams disappear, but I've noticed that when my dreaming is disrupted, the next morning I feel considerably tired and groggy, almost like I haven't slept at all.

So my question is this: is there anything I can take to counteract marijuana's disruptive effect on REM sleep? I have read that things like melatonin and valerian root can help one fall asleep, but I haven't seen much about them improving the actual quality of sleep.

  2. I get the exact same effects you stated with marijuana, whereas i go into a wierd sleep. its definately not REM, as I never am able to have dreams. This only occurs when i'm smoking weed daily. A couple weeks of disrupted REM sleep, and just like you stated, I become lazy, unmotivated and my head becomes foggy as well. I also get very early morning stomach cramps once I quit for 2-3 days after smoking daily for weeks at a time. But thats another issue for another time.

My best honest advice here would be to keep marijuana as a treat. Don't smoke every single day. All the problems I see people go through on here with sleep and appetite and energy levels are from heavy daily tokers.

However, if you do still choose to keep smoking weed on the daily, take a look at this article on Ibuprofen (Advil) and its effects when taken with THC. It says Ibuprofen can counteract the negative side effects of THC.

here is  this article here http://www.cannabisculture.com/content/2013/11/25/Ibuprofen-Can-Kill-Pot-Buzz-Research-Reveals

    Taken Directly from Article:

"Ibuprofen is great for squashing a headache. Turns out, the pain medication can also block a marijuana high, which can be either a bummer or a benefit depending on your perspective.
According to a new study performed on mice by researchers at the Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center and published in the Cell journal, chemicals in the over-the-counter painkiller allow the plant's therapeutic benefits to kick in with no buzz, no memory loss and no loss of motivation. The findings could help provide a way for patients who use marijuana to combat pain but who don't like to get stoned, find relief. And they could expand other legal treatment options for people suffering from chronic disease.
"Our studies have solved the longtime mystery of how marijuana causes neuronal and memory impairments," one of the study's authors said in astatement. "The results suggest that the use of medical marijuana could be broadened if patients concurrently take a nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug such as ibuprofen." "

  3. Interesting... I just wonder if it's okay to take ibuprofen every night as well. I've been smoking once a night for a while, so it's very hard for me to get to sleep without it

  4. I would say no to the ibuprofen but try taking something like ZMA they help me sleep great and I smoke before bed every night and always dream

  5. I've always found that taking a melatonin supplement or some Zzz Quil helps me sleep well when I've been smoking more often.

  6. Cool, I'll check it out. So I'm guessing it helps with the groggy feeling as well?

  7. Jeez,
I smoke cannabis primarly to HELP me sleep.
I find that I now wake up fewer times during the night but only sleep about 6 hours with cannabis, but even less than that without cannabis.

You must be wrong, marijuana doesn't have any negative side effects it only helps people. You are probably losing sleep due to something else not marijuana, marijuana is a cure all for everything.

Go out and get yourself some chamomile tea.

  9. Yea I'm a bodybuilder and I take ZMA with melatonin to help get me and keep me in REM since that's when the neurons are firing to heal the body the most

  10. Awesome, I think ZMA may be the answer I've been looking for. I think I'm gonna stay away from nightly melatonin usage though, just cuz I don't want to disrupt my body's natural melatonin levels more than weed already does lol

  11. Strain plays a big effect on this. :smoking:

  12. Drink iced coffee

  13. So I saw that I already had a 3-in-1 zinc, magnesium, and calcium pill. The serving size for that is three pills, so yesterday I took two in the morning and then I took one more at night, along with a b-complex pill. I took that about 1-2 hours before I wanted to actually be asleep, and then I did my usual smoke session (which is usually only a couple hits out of my mflb). This morning I felt MUCH more well rested and I could actually remember some parts of my dream. Idk if it's just a coincidence, or the supplements actually worked. I'll keep doing it and I'll report on weather it keeps working or not.

  14. Ibuprofen can be very hard on the stomach so always take it with food.
