I am considering buying a bulk package of dry fish hydrolysate.

I have seen that there are also plant protein hydrolysates sold as organic bottled fertlizer.

Is it just hydrolyzed soy protein? If so is there a hydrolyzed soy protein that could be suitable for organic crop production at the health food store/bulk grocery?

Could hydrolyzed whey protein be used instead of the fish hydrolysate?

could hydrolyzed whey protein be used to to culture up a largee amount of lactic acid bacteria than milk?

  2. You need milk to culture lactobacillus because you collect all sorts of organisms in the air so when added to milk it arrests the non lacto strains giving you entirely lactobacillus bacteria. You can make fish hydrolysate with that. I'm doing it right now in fact.

I know microbeman touches on alternatives to molasses using whey but not to substitute fish hydrolysate in compost teas.

Why are you looking for a substitute? Vegan or cost of purchasing a gallon of fish ferts?

  3.
Are you looking at (considering) either California Spray Dry Soluble Fish Powder or perhaps Scoular Dry Soluble Fish Powder by any chance?

  4. Ladyluckbean, hydrolyzed whey protein has lactose in it depending on purity. I was wondering if it could be used as a milk substitute for gardening purposes
It is neither a cost or vegan issue, I don't like buying water bottles/ ferts in them. shipping location is a more important cost saving measure. I shipped 50 pounds of neem meal form peaceful valley seeds in california, totaled 220 w/shipping, if I had ordered from ahimsa, it would have been a little bit cheaper, and a fresher product.

Clackamas, omfg Hi, your's and Chunk's knowledge caused my garden's greatness. Thank you.

My googlefu is weak,  could you toss me some links to purchase those products?  The only dry brands I saw were at peaceful valley seeds website, I did not readily see any branding in the pic. And the boogie brew site also has some, but once again shipping from Cali to MI(for 50 pounds) is not fun.

The Peaceful Valley/Planet Natural consortium uses the same supplier that I do in Portland. That is not to say that this is their only supplier but it's definitely a major one on their list. Looking at their list of products that they offer I'd have to say that they're tied pretty closely.

About 4 years ago a product from California Spray Dry. showed up in Portland and soon after KIS Organics in Redmond, Washington bought some to test. The results as it relates to increasing microbial levels in an AACT were not satisfactory. That does not mean that the levels of elements (N,P, K and whatever) isn't great - it can be both poor in one area and great in another.

The majority of the production is for feed products for livestock, poultry, swine, pet foods, etc. if that helps.

Here's another option to consider - look for organic fish meal made with Naturox. It will be important to use that specific name at a local feed or farm store. In the world of fish meal materials for animal feed this is a big deal with many operators - Naturox. Even in an organic oasis like Oregon, a 50# bag of Naturox meal isn't cheap - my price before any discounts is > $80.00

  6. I looked to find the thread about what he said was ok to substitute for molasses but I can't find it. The nursery rhyme of curds and whey is ringing a bell though. For $210 I can make 14 gallon of fresh fish hydrolysate though. Sounds way better than any dry powder. That's if I bought my fish at $6 or so per lb. I'm on a list for free scraps at a butchers now so after this gallon, it's free.

  7. Clackamas, are there any specific benefits from the naturox brand for agriclutral purposes over other brands that lack the naturox additive?

I saw this http://www.mbferts.com/searchquick-submit.sc?keywords=tria    Do you know if triacontanol powder is acceptable for organic agriculture offhand? It would be cool to use it in addition to alfalfa and see what happens if it does. if not I'm gonna go look it up and I will post up the link.

  8. I am jealous Ladyluckbean. my house mates would not approve of me making my own hydrolysate.
my friend and I just buried like 20 pounds of fish that went bad on my neighbor in between our garden beds. the soil biota will feast this season!

  9. It's not stinky to ferment. Well parts are stinky but once they're in a bottle and sealed, I don't notice the smell. Mines in my living room in a box right now. The buried fish outdoors sounds like a plants dream dinner! Have fun with that!

The solvents don't work well. The correct solvent that works is unavailable to the public. At least that's what I remember reading a year ago.

Alfalfa spout teas would be best and exactly what you're looking for. I would search the No Till thread for the recipe. Pure TRIA and enzymes.

  11. Indeed! how not available to the public is it?

  12. I dunno. That's what everyone wrote in their threads tho. No matter. Alfalfa will give you better healthy plants.
