  1. My neighbor wanted to show me his new compound bow. Sounded awesome, until I discovered I no longer have the strength to pull back a standard 60lb compound bow.
    Totally embarrassing.
I'm obviously no he-man, but I used to be a bouncer....I could always handle myself in a scrap. But after 5 or so years of doing most of my work on a computer, I'm not so sure anymore. I've gone scrawny except for my gut. When I'm naked I look like a 4-legged spider.

So, what can I do without a gym to get my upper body strength back?
I don't have a weight bench, but I might consider getting one. I'd rather find ways to work out using just my body & some things found around the house or yard.

Also-- is there a time of day when exercise is more beneficial? Thanks for any tips

  2. Sqauts and jumpies, burpees, pushups(triangle for chest muscles), reverse crutches to the gut. Running dude, run. Lunges, planks

  3. You might be able to bench press more than your bud and still not pull his bow back. Drawing a bow is an action nothing else I know of can train you for. A compound bow has all it's weight kick in as soon as you start to draw. When you approach full draw it rapidly "breaks over", dropping weight dramatically and making it comfortable to hold. I'm only 5 feet 6 inches and at one time I was drawing a compound with peak weight of 97 pounds in competition. The bow's weight was listed as 55/65. There are ways to tweak bow weight. It wouldn't take you much practice at all to draw a 60 pound compound. You just need to work up for a few days or maybe even a few short weeks with maybe 50 pounds. A compound fitted to you properly and genuinely weighted at 50/60 or 55/65 would be a good choice for you. You can adjust the weight.

  4. But what to do without a gym. Lots. Even if you are really, really cheap, you can use gallon jugs filled with water as Dumbbells, 5 gallon buckets lashed to a heavy wooden handle as barbells. There are sit-ups, pull-ups, push-ups, handstand push-ups (against a wall if your balance is challenged). The idea is to work your muscles. Just get creative. Or join a gym or the YMCA. But you don't need a gym. You can get quite fit without one. 8 weeks of military basic training would be a crash course in physical fitness and body toning and strength building without ever being marched into a gym.

I would focus on diet and full body conditioning. Shadowbox, run, hike, swim, do anything to get moving. Find a local park so you can work out there, maybe doing pull ups, squats, and push ups. I usually exercise in the morning but it doesn't really matter, as long as you are doing it.

Sometimes I run up a hill behind my house and stop to lift/throw big rocks and do push ups. Othertimes I go to some bars to do dips, pull ups, and lunges,  other times I push a wheelbarrow full of rocks up a hill. Get creative, I have change things up often because of my work schedule. Good Luck.
