DWC Do I need to use EACH site?

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by ImpracticalToker, May 18, 2015.

  1. Ok so I have a 9 site DWC reservoir. I really only want to use 2 of the holes. Is there a way to cover the other holes up? Or does this not matter. Also should I use larger holes and net pots if I want fewer but larger plants?

if you have enough nets pots and hydroton

just throw a pot in each, and fill it with the ton. no light will get through

yes, you should use bigger pots for bigger plants

that lid is more for clones though in my opinion, gonna be a tight fit with 2 full size plants in that res

  3. Thank you. I went and bought a new lid i might just try one and see how it goes. This is my 1st time and I'm not expecting much.

Ill post pics once I get the hole cut

  4. OK here's my new set up. I turned the light and everything on to check her out... Its 106 degrees in there !!!! Not ok.. so i have a 190 cfm fan blowing air into it now.. from the top.. will check periodically to see if it goes down... is this right ? Or should the fan be on the bottom ? Or even should it be pulling air out ? Also i have the hydrometer on the light cos its magnetic. Do you think that is making the temps seem higher ?

  5. Yeah, you can't put that up there. It's getting heated up from the light.
You want to know the conditions at canopy height.
Fashion up some sort of cardboard hat/hood for your thermometer, to block direct light from hitting it, and set it on top of your res for now.

  6. Okay, thank you very much. I've moved the thermometer down. When i went back to check it, it read 82f. I'm just trying to get the right conditions before I fully begin.

  7. Damned good idea!
So many jump right in and kill a bunch of plants before they figure out they aren't even setup proper.

  8. That new lid is much better, but if I need to fill a hole ill use a spare pot of clay balls as T'Answer suggested.

It's better to have the fan pulling air out of the top and allowing cool air to come in the bottom. That way you have the air in the tent moving upwards and out. Heat rises so it's better that way

  9. Thanks for your help guys! I plan on actually beginning tonight.

I'm going to have to figure out the water situation as well. My kit came with some little white co2 tablets it says 1/4 a week. Should i start with that amount ?

Any advice on putting the seeds in would be great. I'm using rock wool cubes and rocks from the hydro store.
Also will i have to use my Floragro stuff just yet?

  10. You might want to plan on not beginning tonight. Rather, plan on more research.
There's some good reading in the beginner section, as well as here.

  11. Okie doki then. I shall do some more homework. Lol i feel like this is all i can think about the last couple weeks! I'm dreaming about it!

  12. Been researching a bunch more! Also been working on achieving the perfect environment.

Got everything up and running, just with out anything planted.. heres what i got :

    Temp 75-78f
    Humidity 51%
    Ph 5.8

I have a pretty rigged up exhaust.

small somewhat active intake at bottom using 4in computer fan. I took out the filter because i thought it was adding too much resistance. Its now strong enough to suck up a sheet up paper.

At the top i have a small 4 in fan blowing air out to some ducting attached to a 190cfm fan attached to a carbon filter.

I still need to find a way to get some more of a breeze going inside. I bought a 6in clip fan (smallest at Walgreen's) but i just took up too much space. I thought about leaving the door open when the lights are on and having an oscillating fan blow on it then.

I understand that you guys can't plant, grow, and smoke this stuff for me. But I am asking that if you see anything that can be improved or is just completely off please let me know. Thank you so much !

  13. Looks good, albeit small for my style.
    Couple things:
You don't really need the carbon filter connected at this point. There wont be a strong odor until well into flowering. Doesn't hurt to leave it either. Just decreases the usable lifespan of the carbon.
Also, you should get some aluminum foil tape from the hardware store. Will be in HVAC dept. Tape the entire top of your tub lid. Or cover it with something to block any light from hitting your water.

Now study up on germination. Especially pertaining to rockwool, and the pre conditioning of the rockrool.
Come back with any specific questions that you've got.
You'll get so much more gratification by doing your research and going at it with a strong grasp.

  14. I'll be happy to help you smoke it! [IMG]

  15. I should say rockwool can be difficult for some. You don't need to use it. There are several ways to germinate.
I'd prefer to see someone study up. You can look around and see how many people get all excited, only to set themselves up for frustration, worry, and even panic. That ain't happy growing...
    Arm yourself with knowledge!

  16. Its way smaller than what I wanted, but until I own my own place, stealth and space are big concerns.
I hear what you're saying about the filter. It was used when I bought it and don't mind replacing it once i actually need it. I find it helps with the sound a lot. Also where I already have everything connected, i'd rather keep it up for the sake of keeping things simple.
Do you think running it even though its "used up" will have any negative outcomes? The wall behind is paint-able , so dark marks aren't an issue with me.

As for the lid, I will do that tommorow. Thanks for that I didn't consider doing that. Yes I know my holes are real ugly, but that's what you get with a girl and a steak knife lol!
Honestly I may have gotten too excited and decided to begin germination. My rock wool is soaking in 5.6ph water as I type. I honestly don't mean to be cocky, but I am a research queen. Everybody always asks me how to do things. I don't think i would survive with out internet and knowledge.
Hopefully I don't don't make a fool of myself on this one.

  17. No worries, you're not coming across as cocky. At least not to me, but I'm kinda weird.
You should be fine on the filter. Unless for some reason airflow becomes restricted, or the carbon just plain doesn't do anything for odor.
The holes look good to me.

  18. Sweeet. Thanks a bunch!

Now one thing I've seen a lot of people go back and forth on is water level. I've read it should be and inch or 2 below the pot. But I've also read of people filling half way up the net. I settled in the middle at about 1cm above the net. The bubbles seem to be giving off some nice action.

Co2 tablets.... are they necessary just yet? I was thinking wait until I ransplant.

  19. I don't use co2 till flowering. And, I don't know of the tablets you speak. I use a large bottle of compressed co2 and an Atlas7 controller.
Seedlings likely couldn't use it much anyway.

Were you fill to depends on how you germ. If you're in cubes, you want the water level just splashing into the bottom of the netpot. Via turbulence and popping bubbles from a kickass airpump and a couple stones. That little thing hanging on the wall don't really look kickass... and no idea about your stones.
You don't want your cube to get saturated once there's a seed in it. It can only be moist till roots are coming out. Even then, I'd keep the water level just at the bottoms.

No nutes till you have a couple sets of leaves.

  20. Planning on getting a better pump. Been looking around. My bin is 16L, i was looking at a pump about 35 bucks that said 40lpm... is this overkill ? If its too bubbly can I just put less water ?

If I buy this one i would probably want to have it outside my box and drill a hole for the tube. I would make sure its nice and sealed but also room for movement.
