Reliable Doses?

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by The Greer, May 18, 2015.

  1. I haven't tried cannabis in years. I quit awhile back because as I got older I began to get paranoid episodes when I accidentally smoked too much. The experiences became hell-like.

I have some medical conditions so I very much want to return cannabis now that it's legal but I really need to be able to measure my doses so I never go through those terrible hellish experiences again. I've read articles back from 2014 that doses were unreliable and could vary widely but that they were working on the problem. So now 1 year later I would like to know if improvements have been made in the reliability of doses?

I've never tried edible marijuana and the only reason it's attractive to me is the potential to measure doses...not having to worry if I took too big of a hit or held it too long etc.

  2. You are right to be skeptical of the labeling on store bought products. The best way to achieve a consistent dose is to make your own edibles in large batches. There are some excellent recipes in the "sticky" threads above. Let me know if you have any specific questions. :)

  3.
Thanks I never even considered making my own but I do like new projects!

    I have a couple questions:

    1. I was reading that some products can be absorbed through the mouth rather than swallowed and therefore bypass the liver. What are these products called and can these be made at home?

    2. When making my own, how accurate can I get the dosing? I guess my estimations will be only as good as the advertised THC on the strain I buy. So what margin of error should be expected when going off the advertised THC content?

  4. I always make my own edibles, probably because I can't buy them.  By making them on my own I can control my dosage easily.

1 ounce of pot into 454ml of butter(...whatever a block is).  That give me enough butter to make 4 trays of brownies which I cut each tray into 20-24 brownies.  Which gives me a total of 80-90 brownies.  28g divided by 80 is 0.35g.  So each brownie contains 0.35g of pot.  One is enough to feel the effects nicely, 2 gets you extremely stoned....3 is just crazy, fun but crazy.

Coconut oil in capsules is also a great way to medicate with oil as brownies can make you fat.

    1. No idea, sorry.

    2. When making your own, you will not know the exact THC content (unless you have access to laboratory equipment). So, you will have to use some trial and error to figure out your perfect dose. But once you have figured out that perfect dose, then you will have complete control. What I do is make several dozen gel-caps at a time, all exactly the same portion size. This way I have a calibrated "standard dose" that I can rely on.

  6. Hi, The Greer! I have a couple of answers.

    1. Anything cannabis can be absorbed sublingually and bypass the liver easily. You may want to start with a tincture (or hard candy) that you'd put under your tongue and will activate in as little as 5-15 minutes. I'll be honest, I've never had a good tincture from a dispensary, but if you wanna go that route, I'd make sure to get a big name (like Venice Cookie Company's Sativa One), but understand: THEY ARE EXPENSIVE. If you don't have tinctures in your area ( or don't want to part with your $$$), you can make your own.

    2. If you make your own, as I do, I tend to use tested herb or hash and make Green Dragon. Both BadKat and Psychedelic Sam have instructions for making those. You can extrapolate how much THC/CBD is extracted if you follow the instructions, but if you just want to wing it, make your tincture and start with 3 drops under your tongue. Wait and hour or so to gauge effects, then try a drop or two more until you reach your threshold. Then you will know the dose for you.

Good luck. Making cannabis products is fun and can really help you, IMHO. HTH.

  7. I appreciate all the helpful replies!

I really like the tincture idea. Never heard of it before!

Can you please tell me what you mean by "tested" herb? Does this mean they had a lab test for exact THC percentages?

If made from an average potency plant, can you tell me approximately what percentage of THC each drop would be equivalent to?

Is there another more pure form of cannibas I could purchase to get more medicine with less volume? I would like to purchase a year's worth without having to transport in bulk. Please note that I am doing everything completely legal but still would have to travel a distance to get it so would prefer to do it less often. I think a year's worth of plant material would be quite a bit and would make me uncomfortable having it all at once.

Tinctures are great, and you can make them with a minimum of weed and for a variety of uses. I have one for pain, sleep and just good times.

By "tested," I meant lab tested cannabis, meaning its potency was verified by a cannabis testing lab like SC Labs, The Werc, Steep Hill Labs, etc. You can check for tested cannabis in your area using weedmaps or another search engine... but I like to make sure the shop is legit by checking the lab website for the dispensary account. For example, if Cheech's Dispensary says they have the strain Blue Dream that tested at 35% THC at Greer Labs, I'd go to Greer Labs website to make sure.

Re: average potency, I don't know that there is any such thing. I've gotten brown weed that was super potent and green weed that was weaker than water, so averages are hard to determine without testing.  If you know the THC percentage, you can get a better idea of how many mgs of medicine you need each day and work your numbers out for the month or year.

If you want something more concentrated than weed, you can make tinctures (Green Dragon) from hash and other concentrates (like wax and oil). I tend to use bubble hash since it has no solvents, and the results are ALWAYS more potent than working with weed. Depending on your tolerance, you could make a year's worth of tincture from an ounce or so of hash (depending on how strong it is-- and yes, hash and concentrates are lab tested, too). Both BadKat and Psychedelic Sam have tutorials on the board for working with concentrates. They're more expensive than weed, so if you want to save yourself a drive, concentrates may be your best bet.

Just be diligent about writing down the way you make your tinctures until you get a recipe that works for you. You may want to work with shake first to get your process down (so you don't waste $$), then move onto concentrates. HTH.
