While it isn't easy to say what does what when it comes to some things in nature, I think the dot is more supposed to mimic an eye. If you've ever seen a jumping spider hunt, you'll see them avoid the eyes of their prey and pounce when they're looking away. So when it looks like a big eye on it, a predator that avoids the eyes will be fooled into thinking there is a big ass eye staring at it. I can't really think of a reason a predator or even competition would care if it looked like a leaf with a hole in it.
