Cutting bigger fan leaves to give light to A lower node.

Discussion in 'Plant Training' started by joeyazzz, May 11, 2015.

  1. So I've been growing for medical use for about 2 years now. Just wondering if people do/don't do this to your plants, to describe it there is top leaves ImageUploadedByGrasscity Forum1431319020.229976.jpg
^^^ like so, but underneath these leaves there is a node trying to get by these big leaves. Below you can see what I'm talking about

So the question is do I let the fan leaves stay or I let that node grow and get one more bud site

  3. I'd say pluck that big one and let the new node come up. That new node should hit your canopy level in a day or two if that big fan leaf is out of the way.

  4. Trimming is always helpful your create more light penetration,as well as a lot better air circulation.

Do you plan on topping or scroging?

I was most likely going to top it.

  6. Ok well yeah, you can trim your girls, from the pics they look nice and healthy so they will be able to handle the stress pretty well and if your going to top depending on how many time as wall as how often in between you'll see trimming is a must at some point

  7. I just finished i repotted 3 then toped 2. Most are looking very good the ones I left in the smaller pots look very good but a couple have red stems which could be a symptom of lack of Npk which will go right away when they embed here roots in the super soil

  8. Topping WILL reduce yield AND so will trimming off fan leaves either together or separately . Good luck!

The fan leaves are a nutrient and energy sink (think gas tank), at the end of the cycle the plant will look to those fan leaves to help bulk up the buds in a last ditch effort to reproduce.

Real world tests prove the SCIENCE behind what I'm saying.

Topping is akin to chopping off your brain ..

Search "Apical Meristem"  and "Auxin" if you don't believe me.

I understand the science and topped one of my plants in my last grow to prove it. Real world test wasn't even close, the non-topped plant was larger (of course) and the main colas even taking several from the topped plant didn't even come close to the yield of the plants that were left to their own devices. Bend them but don't top them.

    ^^

    yeah that!

LST your plant.. then you can keep the much needed fan leaves and get light to the lower branches.

    win/win

  10. Well fucking said!

  11. Apical dominance is phenomenon where one meristem prevents or inhibits the growth of other meristems. As a result the plant will have one clearly defined main trunk. For example, in trees, the tip of the main trunk bears the dominant meristem. Therefore, the tip of the trunk grows rapidly and is not shadowed by branches. If the dominant meristem is cut off, one or more branch tips will assume dominance. The branch will start growing faster and the new growth will be vertical. Over the years, the branch may begin to look more and more like an extension of the main trunk. Often several branches will exhibit this behaviour after the removal of apical meristem, leading to a bushy growth.

The mechanism of apical dominance is based on the plant hormone auxin. It is produced in the apical meristem and transported towards the roots in the cambium. If apical dominance is complete, it prevents any branches from forming as long as the apical meristem is active. If the dominance is incomplete, side branches will develop.

  12. I like to tuck the big fan leaves underneath growth nodes. why break off those food factories?

  13. There's absolutely no reason to trim them. I've have the largest fan leaves hovering over the medium lower flowers and they were in the shade the entire grow all the way until senescence when they fell off. Those buds that were in the shade had the potency and the taste same as the main cola. Why mess with mother nature - there's a reason for everything she does, her knowledge is vast. Unless you have good science to back up trimming fan leaves, let them be.  That and they taste good in some canna tea with some sugar leaves. Thank me later...

My quality and yield are better when I don't trim. I'll take some of the suckers off the bottom, but that's about it. I experimented with 3 plants one time, as far as trimming different amounts, and saw for my self how it actually stunts growth. If I don't like the canopy I'll super crop a couple branches and leave it at that.

  15. Those nodes will bud whether there is a fan in front of it or not. The only thing I can tell you is when you start flowering those fans you cut off won't be replaced. Wait a while until you see which stems will dominate and then start trimming away. U can trim all the undergrowth and fans that aren't contributing to the cause now but wait for the upper half.

  16. Good info here no doubt but this is the kind of stuff that is really a pain in the a@@ for us newbies cause regaurding like this paticular subject, other growers (some quite experienced master growers) are saying the science and running many runs showing trimming does show a positive difference in yeild. Which is it? Damn. I love this stuff but crazy how you can flip so many times on something you already think you have a grasp on and it can be based on good points of view.

U need to find urself a kinky lady. Some genetics benifit from being strategically trimmed indoors, some genetics cant handle it. Thats my conclusion in a nutshell. Dont just try it yourself, try it yourself with different phenotypes. I like how MY critical kush responds to it, but i also may have contributed to one of MY chocolate chunks recent death. But i have another chocolate chunk that absolutely craves abuse. Shes a kink fa sho!

It's not cut and dried either way.
I'm my experience {40+ YEARS} Some strains love defoiliation and topping, others respond better to bending and tying down.
