Should I top my plants so they dont outgrow my tent?

  1. Ey Bladezzz..

Wasn't sure where to post this so hopefully it makes into the right sub forum..

I've got 4 x Skywalker OG in a 4x4x7 tent under a 600w HPS. I threw em into flower 12/12 almost a week ago and as of this morning the two tallest shoots on the top of the canopy measured 28" tall and the pots they are in are roughly 8" tall.

Total height from the bottom of the pot to the highest point on the canopy is a total of 36 inches or 3ft.

The height of the tent is 7ft.

The total possible grow space in the room is 4x4x5'2" after counting the height of the hood and giving about 12" from the HPS to avoid light burn.

So I basically only have 26" left of possible grow height.

    My question is......

Should I start shortening the plants so they dont eventually become too tall for the tent?

And if so, how do I go about doing that properly?

Posted a few pics to help show you guys the canopy and distance between the plants and light.

Any feedback is appreciated, im a new grower and this is my first real indoor grow with multiple plants and I've never encountered a spacial issue before:blink::blink:

Let me known if there's any other information I can provide. Thanks again guys!

  2. If it was me i would top them now and flip um. Then i would be mad at myself for not waiting. But it only looks lime you got about 1 foot to work with. Looks like an indica so it may stay low but a toppin wo t hurt too.

Thanks hucksta for the speedy reply.

I already mentioned above that I threw em into 12/12 about a week ago maybe 5 days ago. And the bottoms picture is not representative of the whole tent height. I can still move the light up about 2 feet.

But thank you for your input..

And yes it is indica, a heavy one from my understanding.

    Anyone else?

hello all. I've had this problem and I'm not a professional grower or anything but I just tied them back as much as possible. Nice plants btw.

  6. try some LST to keep canopy even or even as much as possible.

  7. You can carefully bend and tie them down so they grow less vertically.

You can only really do this up until 5 weeks into flower because the stems get hard during flower and you risk snapping them.

It seems like you have enough room but you would hate to have your best colas get light damage.

Although my last grow I had a height issue and I only had about 8" between my 600W light and the top buds and it didn't ruin them.

  8. Well I think it's a little too late for lst, that's more of an early growth stages thing.

I think whAt I'll do is leave it alone and take the risk cuz I really don't wanna mess up any colas in the process of fixing a "problem"

  9. LST stands for low stress training. You can be much more aggressive in early veg stages and get more out of it but plenty of people train their plants with slight bending well into flower to save some room in a pinch or get better light exposure to bud sites. Just have to be more gentle in flower.

You still have a good amount of room, you should be fine.

  10. Fershure, thanks slightly

  11. Look into supper cropping I would suggest this method is it will do what you want with little harm and can be done up to week 3, take your tallest branches pinch them to fracture the stem and felty fold them over. This will help with height restrictions keep you from loosing any tops and will help to beef up lower branches giving you bigger buds below. Don't worry either your plant will heal itself and start growing upright within hours but will be enough to stunt main growth while supplying the rest of your plants with auxins. Hope this helps some and remember always research information given to you this will help prevent wrong techniques and also educate you on why and how things are done. Happy growing.
