Wax Is Weed’s Next Big Thing And No One Knows If It’s Safe

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by Capitalmonger, May 3, 2015.

  1. "Wax Is Weed's Next Big Thing And No One Knows If It's Safe" by Amanda Chicago Lewis as posted In BuzzFeed on April 30, 2015

It is a lengthy article, so I only excerpted a title.gif small portion...

With the help of several chemists both inside and outside the marijuana world, BuzzFeed News identified three additional possible problems with the safety of hash oil beyond residual butane.

The most blatant risk comes from unsafe pesticides, which are found in weed from Colorado to Nebraska to California. Rodger Voelker of the OG Analytical laboratory in Oregon, which has legalized both medical and recreational marijuana, said over half of the several thousand BHO samples he has tested contained illegal pesticides, including one known to cause brain damage. As bad as these toxic compounds might be in smoked weed, they're made several times worse when they are concentrated and dabbed, chemists who have analyzed the product say.

“If people were aware of the level of pesticides we're finding, especially in concentrates, compounds that are absolutely banned by the EPA for human consumption - people have no idea. They hear it's tested and it looks clean, but they're being lied to,” Voelker said.

In addition, all BHO contains concentrated versions of the lubricating chemicals added to lighter fluid to make sure the butane flows well through pumps. As several chemists repeated to BuzzFeed News, there is no such thing as food- or medical-grade butane. Even companies in Colorado and Washington use lighter fluid. While butane itself has a low boiling point and is not difficult to remove using a vacuum oven, these heavier, harmful compounds - including benzene, methylbutane, neopentane, and hexane - remain.

Finally, the least understood health risk posed by hash oil is that of plant waxes, which make up about 15–20% of most BHO. All plants are coated in a film of lipids known as cuticle wax: This is what makes bell peppers shiny. When you smoke marijuana, those waxes burn up, but when vaporizing BHO, the lipids get concentrated and go directly to the lungs, where some chemists believe they form nodules called granulomas on the tissue.

“We have no idea how many people are suffering lung damage from cuticle waxes,” Steep Hill's deCesare said.

  2. I make some shatter from my own buds so I know there is no pesticide but dont realy care for dabbing. I blast when I have way too much bud on hand.

health wise there is no way dabbing is good for you, smoking is not good for you, I dont care is you have a 50 tube triple perk bong, smoke is not healthy.

Anytime people call smoking "Medicating" I just shake my head.[IMG]  Smoking is just getting high.

Ask your own doctor if you dont believe me, my doctor told me I can have all the cannabis I want in an EDIBLE form.

Also the medical benefit of THC is it can help you sleep, All of the other medical benefits of cannabis are from CBD not the THC.

    CBD is the medicine.

  3. well you forgot THC helps with appetite stimulation, pain relief, glaucoma, nausea..

Yeah, I personally think every time I'm dabbing, I'm inhaling plenty of butane.

As for smoking, yes smoke is bad for you, but if you're going to smoke anyways, smoke cannabis.
humans consume massive amounts of cannabis via paper or wooden pipe, and it's not nearly as bad as tobacco.

I was told wax or concentrates are healthier due to less vegetable matter, but there is an addition of chemicals to remove the vegetable matter.

I'll take vegetable matter over butane.

  5. Rosin, at least you eliminate the butane risk.  Pesticides can be a problem, but we also consume plenty when eating produce.

To my mind, all of those problems are solved by total federal level legalization. Soon there will be a market for pure butane specifically marketed for BHO. If these incredibly premature and inconclusive findings are corroborated by other labs and other research, i have no doubt that people will be demanding pesticide free weed if they arent already.

Me thinks now that weed is winning the public hearts, even wishy-washy leftist swill like buzzfeed is posting shit like this just to be contrary. Political special interests have no interest in your rights, only in pinching from your pocket.

  7. no amount of weed is too much, good sir

  8. Everyone already knows BHO is not safe to smoke and can be extremely dangerous to manufacture.

This week on Hash Church,  activist Todd McCormick said there have been 31 BHO explosion deaths in California alone in the past 12 months.

  9. lol its nothing new....just to punk new comers who think they invented ground breaking shit, actual fact: its all been done before just never put in history, cause history repeats itself

If it's federally legal this can all be straightened out and the fogginess of information right now will be ridded of because there will have been a high amount of research on it.

4 states researching weed--- or 50 states researching weed..

  11. I think many of you are not reading the real risks that are inherent to wax use/consumption.  The lipids that are in the wax in much higher concentration than regular weed.

The people that are using Wax/dabs are also hitting T levels unheard of from regular flower smokers.  One lady was posting that she was using 1/2 a gram a day in concentrates for YEARS and was wondering if vomiting or coughing up blood was a problem......

Kids are using concentrates because of it's stealth and they are literally checking out of life.  I saw a post today of someone bragging about "Should I do 1/2 a gram of dab" with total strangers egging him on,  "Just do it".....seriously, total morons.  <<<<This is what is going to hurt federally legal weed.

  12. Properly made bho you will get less butane in a hit the you would get from a hit of s bong with a lighter.
    Stop smoking trash kids.

  13. I am going to do a half gram Dab right now to spite people like you who don't know what they are talking about.

    Calm down....do a gram...I could care less.....

  15. hash oil is nothing new, not for yeears, of course theres gonna be people who take it too far, thats what we as humans do, push boundries.

  16. Corporate will advance this alongside the portable vape injection mentality.

Big $$$$$ in chemically treated and rendered mj.

Look at tobacco for reference.....and it's government controllability".

  17. new to "wax" been smoking pot since before calculators you know slide rule days... is there any real data out there
addressing the hole Butane ingestion ?.
Like the wax.... kinda like putting a turbo charger on your every day driver.
Just like weed......doesn't take long to build up a tolerance
    All and all

    IT'S AN ELEVEN MAN

  18. Stop complaining about these harmful chemicals in concentrates and focus your attention on the shit you shovel into your face , every single day.

And they honestly have the nerve to post stuff like this.

The stuff you eat , I guarantee , is 10X worse for you.

  19. I might agree with you if there where nobody else like me that already watches what we eat, at least now that I am retired I have time to do much better than before. No/little processed foods and we go out to eat as little as possible. Every single time I clean my bong it is clear what is going into my lungs. Lots and lots of nasty shit. We use filters on our Js and they are brown at the end after smoking. We mix concentrates with our flowers so we can smoke LESS not more. The real danger are the underage dumb dumbs that are doing 100% concentrates, lots of it and basically becoming zombies. There was a valid reason in days gone past that beer was legal at a younger age and hard liquor was 21.

I already know what excessive smoking can do for you from looking at where my high school friends are at the age of 50. My daughter has seen straight A students drop out over marijuana. It is clear that regular use has little negative effects but overuse can ruin your life. I have known people that drink every single day and never have a problem, I drank 2ish beers a day for several years never missed work, never lost a job and never had major personal issues. I know people that drink to excess every chance they get and they are living a nightmare. You can not stay totally ripped all day or drunk and expect life to be all roses. I have a friend that to this day thinks everything was given to me. He is jealous of me like I did something other than work my ass off all my life. Go figure, we both smoked like crazy at a young age, we both grew up poor. I quit to make something of myself and he didn't.
