Is anyone living off the grid, or plans to? Me and my partner have a ten year plan to buy a property and build an off grid home. I've been researching this on and off for a few years but recently since getting my dehydrator and planting crops, the urge to know and learn more has turned into a daily reading list What ways did you start out? Any advice, thoughts, or suggestions? Peace out
I think it would be better/cheaper to buy a house thats already built and off the grid. There are houses like this in Colorado for under $70,000 with 5+ acre's. They are not 100% complete but much cheaper then starting from scratch and are live in ready. Also if you dont have farming skills already you could join a Wwoofing group for a season and farm your but off. http://www.realtor.com/realestateandhomes-detail/233-Derigo-Ln_Westcliffe_CO_81252_M27936-80435?row=3
Do you know of any places like that in the carolinas? That would be the ideal location. We built a cabin on a friends property for roughly $1500. Next time I head back out that way I'll take pictures so you can get an idea of what our first attempt looks like. It is a work in progress that would be easier worked on if i spent more than three days at a time there, which hopefully soon I'll be there for a week. Thanks for the idea on joining that group. Looking into it now Peace out
In that price range I would by a old RV and move it on some land. Old tow behind RV's can be had for cheap, there are lots of them so you can be picky and find a nice clean one. They will have a bed, sink, stove, shitter, shower, furnace and if your lucky a generator. If you dont have a truck I'm sure you could find a guy and pay him a couple hundred bucks to have it moved. If you go this route read up on buying used RV's and make sure everything works for the most part. Roof can leaks is one major thing to look out for.
Would they be able to tax it? If so, what tax level could I expect? I've been looking into tree houses. In some states they cannot tax tree houses, and some of them are beyond beautiful ..... And then I remind myself not to get too carried away haha xD Peace out
When I come up on a lot of money, I'm building a permanent cabin with the idea of living off the land. It still would be plugged into the grid for legal reasons, but I would of chosen a spot with a natural water well, farmable ground, breeze, and sun farming. Security would be some raises crows and wolf hybrids.
I live in low country sc I'd say check out the area around francis Marion national forest around georgetown north of Charleston. A lot Of Beautiful land on the river surrounded by huge live oaks..Spanish moss ..tons of hunting. I'd look into buying old rice plantation land on the santee river cheap, remote and they were surveyed to be self sufficient plantation. Many of the same tracts of land that made up the plantations are still together and un developed. Sent from my iPhone using Grasscity Forum
Just came back from Charleston. Beautiful area. SC Hwy patr0l can kiss my ass though. They have areas set up where I shit you not I counted eight separate cars pulled over within a 3 minute period. Could that county have been raising funds more? At least try to make it look like police work.
I cant answer that for you. In Colorado there are area's that a RV on land can't be a permanent home.
