I think there would have been a bloody uprising and a different civil war(can you imagine how nasty that would be nowadays). Not to mention that enabling the use of slaves would open up human trafficking on a VERY large scale possibly bringing around a black market sex slave industry. If all that happens whats to stop someone from grabbing your daughter from a playground and selling her to some fat cheeto covered slob so he can use her till she's unusable. And before you think I'm going a lil far with my theory, take a look at how many people have been arrested lately for keeping slaves/kids locked up in their basement without food or using them as sex slaves.
 
In short, Freeing the slaves was a good move.

It's an interesting notion though. Essentially you're asking if we as a society are truly evolved, or if we are still capable of the horrible things done in the past. I say, given the right circumstances we could have slavery to the same degree as we've had. We find it baffling how a large part of Europe could get that brainwashed during the second world war, but given the right circumstances, humans are really capable of horrible stuff. Society's standards and our sophisticated lifestyles are merely a facade.

 

I think that if slavery in America did somehow make a "comeback" it would be reversed. by this I mean that I believe white people would turn into the oppressed and the "minority" would become the oppressors
