Ccoconut Oil vs Butter

Discussion in 'Weed Edibles' started by BigMamaG, Apr 24, 2015.

  1. I have been cooking with cannabis for a long time, but I have never liked using butter, I don't like the taste. I have used cannabis in various other ways; but about a year ago someone turned me onto coconut oil. It's lower in fat and does not bypass the liver, which is what is most responsible for soaking up the thc when eaten. You cook with it at lower temperatures, which is better for cannabis cooking anyhow. And it gives a nice coconutty flavor to your brownies, cookies, and whatever else you want to cook with it. I was just curious if anyone else had tried it and  what you thought of it. Or maybe see if there were any other great ideas out there...

Recently I made a batch that was super strong..omg! I ate one little brownie before bed totally expecting to just get a great nights sleep... nope! I laid there for 4 hours wishing I could jsut stop being high and go to sleep... was still LOADED when I got up the next morning. Was almost like mushroom high!

  2. I switch between extra virgin coconut oil and butter.  The coconut oil I use has double the fat content.  Personally I am not a fan of the coconutty taste but I still eat my edibles.  I use butter to avoid this taste but coconut oil seems to make better brownies in my experiences.

  3. I experienced that exact same thing last night.

I make cannabutter pancakes. A teaspoon of butter for each one. Made 3, ate 3

I think I like the way coconut oil cooks better than butter overall, I've had realy good results. I am not coconuts biggest fan when it comes to the flavor... but I certainly like the taste better than when I use butter.

Your coconut oil may have a higher fat content, but it is the kind of fat that counts... something in the type of fat... I'll have to find some rescources to link, or at least get my verbage right... lol, stoner brain this morning!

Okay, so I found an article that explains it a little better, although this article isn't specific to using it for cannabis cooking...

About 65 percent of coconut oil is made up of medium-chain triglycerides, according to "Lippincott's Illustrated Q&A Review of Biochemistry," by Michael A Lieberman and Rick Ricer. The medium-chain triglycerides in coconut oil are brought directly to your liver, bypassing the need for the action of bile salts and pancreatic lipase for absorption, these researchers assert.Advocates of coconut oil say the fact that medium-chain triglycerides go quickly to your liver is a benefit. When coconut oil's medium-chain triglycerides are brought to your liver, they are converted into energy that is immediately available, says Siegfried Gursche, author of the book, "Coconut Oil." That means these fats are used for energy rather than being stored in your body like long-chain triglycerides are, Gursche says.

here is a link to the article, it goes tallks about how thw liver absorbs fats and how they can be used and stored and such...

  6. Butter is a fussy ingredient in the kitchen. Unless it has been clarified, it contains solids that can burn and ruin the batch if your temperature is too hot. Coconut oil on the other hand is very easy to work with and is suitable for high heat cooking.

  7.
I only use the coconut oil now. The Organic "refined" works great and also can be used for high heat cooking. The Organic raw has a coconut taste that may not be wanted in the recipe. First batch I made I used some to make cookies. I use the oil for1/2 the amount of shortening called for. Our oil is pretty strong. I can only eat half a cookie, husband eats a whole one.  First time I ate a whole one, big mistake! Only problem I have with making "strong cookies" is that you can't have MORE COOKIES. Bummer
