Help me diagnose why my truck wont start

Discussion in 'Planes, Trains & Automobiles' started by NEFarmer, Apr 24, 2015.

  1. I'm trying to figure out why my truck died on me.
    Its an 2003 chevy tracker.

    Here's what I've done:
Added gas to make sure the fuel gauge didn't go out on me.
    Has plenty of battery.
    Starter turns over.
Fuel pump turns on when the key gets turned on.
I tryied Spraying starter fluid into the carb and still didn't fire up.
I pulled a spark plug and tried starting it and it has spark.
I unhooked the positive lead to the battery to reset the ECU.
I've checked all the fuses and don't see any blown.
Fuel filter is a little dirty But not bad.

Anyone have any other suggestions? Please..
I've done everything besides push it off a cliff.

An engine is really a simple thing. It only needs air, fuel and spark to run. It's really odd that you said you have spark and even with starter fluid it's not burning it off. How did the truck come to not running. Were you driving and it went dead? If the tests you have done so far are legit I would question if the engine jumped timing on you. I assume it also has cam and or crank position sensors that might be acting up too. Do you have spark on ALL plugs?

  6. Im sure if its not starting it will store some sort of codes.
Strange that you have fuel and spark, but still no start...
Might wanna check the Idle Air Control (IAC) Valve [IMG]
Cam sensor controls the fuel, the crank sensor controls spark, but if you're getting spark then its not the crank sensor. If you remove the wires from the coils then there should be a good spark between the nipples on the coils if one of the coils isn't sparking then switch the coils around and see if the issue follows the coil. If it does replace the coil if it doesn't then take it to a shop and have it properly diagnosed. In that case it could be a lot of things.

  7. Can you hear the fuel pump priming when you turn the ignition on?
    And
Can you hear the starter motor click when you turn the ignition on?

    Chef.

  8. Have you checked compression or timing?

  9. So is this thing running yet?
    If so what was it?

  10. no its still not running because I don't have the money to fix it right now, I was told it was the upper chain link? In the motor, I was quoted around 400 bucks to fix it cuz I gotta take the motor apart, and if I'm fixing the upper chain I might as well do the bottom also

  11. Keep in mind that it's 12 years old. After 10 years, car engines generally breakdown unless you invest $$$ to re-build them.

  12. Check all you plugs and check to make sure your air filter isn't clogged
