2nd seed dead after 3 days?

  1. Why do my seeds keep dying?

I paid a lot for good genetics and my seeds keep dying, someone please help.

    Info:

Soil - Promix Vegetable and herb
Pot- bottom half of one 1L pop bottle, holes poked all over the bottom and a few on the side.  First attempt I used a 2L bottle, with no drainage, the first seed sprouted, and died at 3 inches, this seed didnt even sprout, checked on the seed and root dried up.

Replanted her just in case I get lucky.

But- why are my seeds dying?

  2. you are killing them

do some reading and get some quality equipment before wasting more seeds

Keep reading and trying...ditch the 2 liter bottle and get a proper pot they are cheap. Most likely you are over caring for your plant, we tend to love them to death and pics of your setup help
Guess I should refresh once in awhile...lol

  4. Thanks yea I will buy a new pot before I germ anything else. yea I've been reading on here nonstop the problem is everyone says something different, now my brains gone mad here, haha.  For example I added drain holes because I read on here they were needed, and the seed didn't live as long as when I had zero drain holes. Some say root down, others say root down isn't good.  Some say place under light as soon as you plant, others say wait until it sprouts... Can someone be awesome and give me the real advice I need to get her through the first few weeks?  Please and thank you, this shit is sad ha...

Also is it a better idea to just plant in my large pot, and keep it there for its whole life, or do the transplanting stuff.  Will post a pic of my set up on this thread now soon, thanks again

  5. Germ in a wet paper towel inside a zip lock baggie in a warm place once the root starts to peak out (usually 12-24 hours) I plant them in a solo cup with maybe 8 small drain holes in the bottom. Get your soil in the cup, make sure it's kinda loose and not packed in there hard.
Poke a little hole in the dirt with your finger maybe 1/4" down tops, place seed gently in the hole, lightly cover with just a little dirt, just enough to keep your seed covered.
Then I give it a nice watering using a water bottle with some holes in the lid.
Then I'll have a seedling in about 2 day's. Water as needed, when the cup feels light compared to when you watered it before. It'll take a bit to get the hang of it.
I water my seedlings every 2 or 3 day's. Don't wanna drown them but I don't wanna chance their small root system totally drying.
And you wanna transplant, at least start in a plastic cup and then go to your finishing pot.

  6. Thanks a lot.  I was finding the top of my soil would dry out rather quick though. But then a few inches or so down it would be moist. Then I'm afraid to water because the soil down below is still moist, I start worrying about the drainage and waterlogging then...

What should I do if this happens, or is it even a big deal so early on? Maybe switching pots will fix this?

  7. Yeah that's something I don't worry about the first few days of life, I wanna make sure that seed stays moist and the tap root doesn't dry up and die.

Get a fabric "smart" pot to transplant into once you have a good seedling started. You don't want a clear pot at all so don't use a pop bottle man.

  8. Pic of my setup, in my closet. the light's adjustable. keep in mind im getting more lights in a weeks time, gonna get 8 CFL bulbs, 4 with the right kelvin for veg, and 4 with right kelvin for flowering, and going to get a 4-way splitter.  Im only growing one plant at a time. The light in the pic is 18W LED, and the height in the pic is how ive kept it. I've been keeping the thermostat in the room between 70-80 Farenheit, if I walk in and it seems super hot ill turn it down a bit, and vice versa if it feels cooler.
    Any tips, suggestions welcome!

  9. Thanks man big help really needed to know if I had to worry about that.

  10. No problem we all started somewhere. Good rule of thumb is 100w for your first plant and 50 for every extra plant.
And for watt amount go by actual wattage used not equivalent.
So a 23 watt bulb that's equivalent to a 50 watt is really just giving you 23 watts. That's a common noob misconception too.
Your bud won't be the best, if you could invest even $100 in a decent little light your bud would probably be much better.

  11. Thought rule of thumb was to have a dry period between watering?

  12. Sure is but if the top soil is drying so fast his seedlings are dying then he'll need to keep them wet.
Right now he's struggling just to keep a seedling alive, one obstacle at a time here man ;)
Once he's got something above ground starting to grow we'll throw more pointers at him.

And yes you're right about the dry period in between waterings but he's gotta get a plant first before he can worry about that.

    Update:

Got new lights, 6500K Cfl 23 Watt bulbs, three of them.  Ditched the pop bottle and just planted my germinated seed in a white ceramic cup.  Placed with the soil about 3 inches from my lights.  I watered around the seed, checked an hour later and the soil's still moist on top. The room feels warm but not too warm.  I'm going to keep checking every hour or two tonight to see how fast the soil dries.  I'm starting my lights at 10 hours on, 14 hours off, heard from a long time grower this is best, and then when you want to flower switching to 6 hours on?  Gonna attach a few pics.  Any advice feel free, or post your thoughts.[IMG]

  14. Whoever told you that, stop fucking listening to them lol.
You want your lights on 18 and off 6 for veg (that's what most people run for veg from what I've noticed)
Then when you want then to flower you drop them to 12/12.

If your lights are on 10 hour's your seeds will think they're running out of time already, grow maybe a foot and start flowering. Sure you can do that but it'll cut your yield greatly compared to vegging on 18/6 for 6 weeks then flipping to flower.

  15. Thank you lol.  My seeds were drying and dying when I had them on 18/6, was that just the LEDs?  Is it okay for just planted seeds to be put on 18/6 right away?  CFL 6500k

  16. They weren't dying from the lights being on man, sure maybe that dried your soil and that's what killed them but they didn't die from too much light or anything.

Yeah it's fine to have seedlings under 18/6. Like I said anything 12 or less and you're starting them in flower.
Just follow my advice from before and you should have a seedling in no time. Usually takes about 48 hours after I germ and plant them for them to sprout.
