Proper flower storage

Discussion in 'Marijuana Consumption Q&A' started by Klopy, Mar 31, 2015.

  1. it breaks my heart when I see quality herb crushed in the corner of a kief encrusted sandwich Baggie. It's no way to treat good herb, and you lose potency and quality as a result. Only keep your cannabis in an air tight glass jar. Some things to look for in a jar:

Size is important when choosing a jar. too much air space will cause the buds to dry out, and they will shake about the jar easily losing precious kief. Try to find a jar that perfectly fits your amount of cannabis. If you buy large amounts, it's good to have a set of large to small jars that way you can move your bud as you smoke.

Try to get a jar with a tight fitting lid, one that won't come off accidentally, and make sure it's tough enough to withstand a drop. It's ideal to have a dark jar, as light, especially sun, degrades thc.

Ball Mason jars are perfect, as are most of the decorative ones at head shops, just ensure there is a good seal. Another notable example are tight-vac containers.

When storing cannabis long term the correct moisture level is important, or mold will grow. Boveda humidity packs work great at keeping the realitive humidity at a suitable level for long term storage. Also sold are special vaccum sealer attachments that seal mason jars, good for long term storage. Keep cannibis in a cool dry place, and try to crack the jar at least once a week, just to ensure the moisture level is correct.

When storing cannibis short term or storing cannabis your using frequently, I often see people let it dry out inadvertently dry out, and then crushing or breaking the then fragile nugs to bits. This happens because of too much air exposure and improper handling. When smoking, make sure to keep your bud sealed as much as possible to reduce air exposure. This will keep your buds from becoming brittle. When handling your jar, disturb the bud inside as little as possible, every shake sends kief flying off. When keeping jars in your pants pocket, consider that every step is shaking the bud around.

Follow these steps, and your cannabis will be as fresh as the day you bough it forever.

    Cliffs of peace:

OP used 6 paragraphs to tell us what 95% already know. Use a jar/container

  3. So.....

the point here, or the main bullet, or the overall theme would be to.....

Shit, lost my train of thought.

    What is this thread about?

  4. Great advice man, I always store every part of my plants in kiln jars (Mason jars) in my dark cool wardrobe.

  5. lol pretty positive I smoke up too quickly for this to matter much. Dry buds are pretty bad though, disappoints me just to have to break those nugs up, it doesn't even feel like handling a bud.

  6. I store my ish in a baggie, then put it into a mason jar...easier to deal with shake in a baggie than a jar imo

  7. If you care about your bud being crushed in the corner of the bag then you care too much obsessed in my opinion. I was gonna crush it before i smoked it anyways. Its the same thing still. I store my bud in baggies and i dont mind the bit that gets crushed before i smoke it because i notice no difference when i smoke it.

This is not a cheap idea but since we grow medically we have 5-6 oz around a lot of the time.  We store ours in a humidor and some other in a mason jar with a humidity pack in it.  We use an oasis digital humidity device to keep the humidor at the proper humidity that we desire.  My wife is the only one that smokes and I can tell you when she opens the humidor it smells great, what I see looks great and she says it smokes great and has close to the same effect as day one.  We have kept our stash in there for 3-4 months so far and she has been happy.

Storing for a long period tends to make the smoke smoother but it does get weaker as time goes by.  Smaller amounts I suggest humidity pack in a Mason Jar.

I saw jars with humidity lids, they are real expensive for what you get IMO.  Mason jar with cheap humidity pack from Amazon was way more cost effective and did the same thing.  Don't want to even spend that much?  Mason jar and put a small piece of orange in there to moisten up your smoke you only do this if you have allowed your stash to dry out, not all the time.  Fair warning is obviously your smoke will have a citrus taste that you may not like.

This is more for people who pick up and keep large amounts that they will have for month(s) to allow it to continue curing and developing flavour and smell; as well as actually enjoying looking at their flowers.
Not for people who buy a twin and smoke it in two days.
