Hey guys I am still trying to prepare for my first ever grow, I just had a quick question I only plan to do 3-4 plants my first time and I have an all white closet I plan to put them in. I was going to hold off on a grow tent until I get past my first grow so I am thinking of just putting aluminum foil on the walls around the plants would that be a good alternative to a grow tent? Plain white walls are fine, actually better than foil or wrinkled safety blankets that seem to be so popular.

If the walls are white they will be fine, but aluminium foil works very well. There are a lot of myths about using foil but it reflects very well. Sticking it to the wall and cleaning it is the problem because it tears very easily. With all the cutting for ventilation and light leaks you have to deal with getting a tent might be the easier option

my closet has white walls and a wood door. All kinds of light leaks because the closet is in my office and I use my office 24/7. And the plants do just fine. Nowadays for side lighting most just install led strips

They aren't usually light proof but they do reflect light ok. Hold the sheet up to the light and see if you can see the bulb through it. All light that passes through is not being reflected, but most light wont pass through unless it's really thin and crap quality How many harvests have you had with light leaks? Any hermaphroditism? I get around a pound from a 600w HPS, but that's with heavy training and 20 years of experience. Half that should be easy enough even for the first run I would think
no hermies, and I use feminized seeds, we're talking tv, computer and night light and candles leaking through the space between the door and the floor and the wall
None of those things put out enough PAR energy to bother a plants dark cycle. In over 25 years of indoor growing, I've never had a light sealed / light tight flowering room. I haven't had a hermie since I stopped flowering seed plants before at least 4 weeks veg. I grow clones though, so I don't start seed plants all that often (I have grown quite a few seed pants over the years though). I have never had a clone turn hermie. I have a skylight and a window in my flowering room now to let sunlight in, and on a full moon night I could literally read a book in there if I let my eyes adjust first.
It all depends on the degree of leak. I have light coming in through my vents, that doesn't cause problems but a leak big enough if going to cause problems
15 years outdoors under the full moon 15 years indoors in a very large (by the pre legal standards) money is no object grow room which still was never 100% lightproof only a few in my new leaky apartment closet
