From country-singing legend to cannabis-smoking connoisseur, Willie Nelson is about to become a big-time marijuana merchandiser, preparing to peddle his own elite Willie's Reserve strain of pot in states where selling pot is legal.

Nelson, one of country music's "outlaws" known as the "Red Headed Stranger," also plans to open an undetermined number of marijuana stores in the next year, according to Michael Bowman, the marijuana legalization lobbyist who is functioning as a public relations spokesman for Willie's fledgling business, the Daily Beast reports.

Nelson has been a very vocal advocate for marijuana legislation for years, has been arrested at least four times for marijuana use, and has had fans leave pounds of pot on his stage at the end of concerts, the Daily Caller reports.

He broke the news of his new venture in an interview at the Heartbreaker Banquet he hosts every year as part of the SXSW music festival, the Daily Beast notes.

"Willie has spent a lifetime in support of cannabis, both the industrial hemp side and the marijuana side. He wants it to be something that's reflective of his passion," Bowman told the Daily Beast.

"Really he wants it, at the end of the day, to envelop what his personal morals and convictions are," Bowman said.

Recreational use and sale of marijuana are legal in Alaska, Washington, Colorado, Oregon, and the District of Columbia, Governing reports.

"Right now, we'll focus on the states where legalization has occurred, and as new states open up, those opportunities will present themselves on a state-by-state basis," Bowman told the Daily Beast, "or until the feds do something."

In what Bowman called the "anti-Walmart" model, the stores also will feature strains of marijuana from other growers and suppliers "who meet quality standards," with Nelson himself, presumably, as the chief quality control tester.

"This is a culmination of Willie's vision and his whole life," Bowman told the Daily Beast. "You have the men like Willie who's been out there getting arrested, standing up saying what's right, and not wavering from that core."

Nelson told the Huffington Post in 2013 that marijuana legalization is "only a matter of time. The economy going off is going to help it a lot. There's money there, and anyone with any brains at all can say, 'Why do you want the criminals to make all the money off of this when it's proven that it won't kill you unless you let a bale of it fall on you?'"

In concerts, Nelson even has been known to perform a song titled, "Roll Me Up And Smoke Me When I Die.

  2. Well he already has a strain named after him

  3. Doubt he sells a strains that was just created to bear his name in his shops when he can just create a strain that he approves of and attach his name to it himself
