Seedling look sick after transfer to hydro

Discussion in 'Hydroponic Growing' started by sn420, Mar 24, 2015.

  1. hey guys I'm having the same problem I had awhile back when my seedling died.

After germination, I put the seedling into a Rockwool cube only and I sprayed water on top of the Rockwool cube.

After almost 2 weeks it grew a bit (slow growth)
The other day I finally put the Rockwool cube inside hydrotons on top of the resvoir. I have water coming out of a small tube (bubbleponics style) inside the hydrotons and onto to the bottom of the Rockwool cube.

This morning when I checked on it the leaves were dropping down and when I checked the bottom of the cube, a little part of it was turning brownish. I ripped off the brown area and now it's just sitting on top of the hydrotons to dry out a bit.

I'm stuck in this position and cannot figure out how to solve this problem. I had the same problem while back and it died.

I added about half of grow/micro/bloom nutes in the res with ph 6.0 6 drops of superthrive.

    I'll post pics

  2. Leave it sitting on top. Keep that tube thing away from the cube. It's pry over watering.
ph 1/8 th strength nutes to 5.5
once a day dampen the cube. More if it is drying out too fast.
When you have new growth and some roots poking out, then get it down into the hydroton.
Then bump up to half strength and ph of 5.8

  3. Make sure the rotwool isn't staying wet all the time. Roots need a lot of oxygen. Next time put the seedlets straight in to the clay balls and forget the rotwool altogether. It's so much easier

  4. Great advice! Thanks guys. I'm gonna hope this works.

  5. I know that some people get great results starting in rockwool cubes, but I always struggled between too wet and too dry in the early stages.

Personally I find it much easier to start seedlings/clones in 50/50 perlite/vermiculite and then transfer them directly into clay pellets.

A perlite/vermiculite mixture is almost impossible to over water, and promotes good root growth.

  6. Hm str8jacket. I'll definitely try that next time. Thx!

  7. I do alight with rockwool.
Honestly though, the only reason I'm still using it is because I have a shit-ton of it.
    Ain't gonna throw it away...

  8. GC is great! A fellow blade has an issue, before long they have a few tried & true choices to pick from for the next run.
I've never worked with rockwool but I did try out rapid rooter plugs and since then have had 100% germination. They're cellulose based and as far as I know, do not need to be ph adjusted prior to using with cannabis. When I run out of them I am going to try planting right in the hydroton like GG does.

  9. I have one other extra question. I'm using a 5' pot and I now moved the water hose towards the very bottom of the net pot and brought the Rockwool cube towards the top (a little above brim of pot), but my question is- when the roots grow towards the bottom of the net pot and near the water hose will the root that grows through it going to get any kind of root rot for continuously getting wet by the hose?

I've added sm90 to the mix and hope that will not cause any potential root rot. Or is it going to be okay the way it's going?

    Thx!

  10. Post some pictures of your system.  I'm not getting a very good mental image.
    I don't know what sm90 is.

SM90 will make the res smell nice. I'm not sure what other benefit it would have. It's a good foliar spray (diluted as per instructions) if you have spider mites, or struggling root system.

  12. Is it just me or am I missing the link to upload pictures from my iPhone?

As long as your nutrient solution is adequately aerated there won't be any issues with the roots being constantly wet. That's the idea of Deep Water Culture. It sounds like you have a top feed in the system, this isn't necessary. Could do with a photo though, I too can't picture the set up fully

  15. Okay I'm not sure what you mean as long as my nutrients are aerated. I use3 parts grow/bloom/micro from advanced nutrients.

    Heres the update:

Today when I got back home the seedling definitely got bigger, but not by a huge growth.

I'm just glad it didn't die like last time. So far so good.

However when I checked inside the res, it had a bit of an odd smell. Like the water from inside a fish tank (almost)
The tubes and the inner walls were also a little brownish. The water temp is atabiut 70.

Will this be a problem for the roots or is that just the residue from the mixes? If so,is this okay to leave until for about a week?

  16. Alright I finally got some pictures up.

This is pretty much my setup inside my tent.

    image.jpg
As I've mentioned, I moved the water hose all the way down towards the bottom of the net pot.
I'm still wondering if I should keep using this or Ido should just fill the bucket all the way up till it hits the bottom of the net pot.

    Any suggestions?

In this picture... I wanted to show the brownish color it was turning inside of the res.

My only nutrients ihave inside as far as the beginning goes plus ph down and sm90.

Please tell me if something can be better or fixed.

    Thank guys!

Get rid of the watering tube setup, fill it up and go straight dwc.
Get a nice big air pump and 3-4 stones.
    Never look back.

Make sure you keep res temperature in check also.

  18.
Are you aerating your nutrient solution? Roots won't survive under water without adequate aeration. Use an air pump that pushing around 1 litre of air per minute for every 2 litres of nutrient solution

  19. What GG means by "aerated", is bubbling air in the solution.
You want lots of bubbles! Meaning lots of O2 in the water for the roots.

  20. Yeah I think I'm gonna get rid of the top water feeder.
But that means I'm gonna have to put more water in it, but I was thinking of also adding 4 liters (per 2 liters) of iced water bottles, so that should help with the rise of water. My bucket is pretty big (10gallons).

Considering the size of my bucket I have a decent air pump with a disc airstone, size of about 5' to 6' round.
Will this be enough for the 10 gallon bucket?
