Smart Pots/ Burlap Pots

Discussion in 'Growing Marijuana Indoors' started by torofanatic, Mar 23, 2015.

  1.  First grow here and I bought one 5 gallon burlap pot that looks like a smart pot but came with plastic on the inside and one 1/2 inch hole in the bottom. Claims to have good drainage... Or so the package says. I thought fabric pots sometimes known as smart pots were only fabric and did not have anything on the inside as to let the roots get air and for better drainage. Should I remove the plastic bag on the inside? (its is stitched in but can easily be removed with scissors) I can post pictures if needed. Btw I will be growing autos so they will start and finish in the same pot hopefully this one.....

PS: Saw the post about making multiple posts... yes i posted twice but I saw only 2 people viewing the other section and like 49 viewing this one so...

  2. What I understand about smart pots is that when the root grows through the fabric and is exposed to dry air it prunes the tip of the root causing branching back up the root. In normal pots the root can go round inside the pot without reaching an impasse which causes little branching along the root.

  3. soundsl like you ended up with the worst of both worlds. Smart pots air prune roots but the are hard to work with and indoors can sit in a pool of water if you over water. Smart pots were designed for outdoor growth where the bottom of the pot sits on bare ground.

personally, I use smart pots outdoors and air pots indoors

  4. The burlap would be too porous and would drain to quickly without the liner.  If you want to make your own fabric pots use pond underlayment felt or landscape fabric or repurpose a fabric bag from the store.

  5. Hey PW

I tried storing a big batch of freshly made organic soil in big burlap coffee bags one time. Never again lol I think they lasted three weeks before they rotted completely out.

these burlap bag are specially coated on the inside. I cut out the plastic and the burlap seems to be coated. Im gonna start these indoors and eventually put them outdoors when the weather cooperates. I only bought one of theses pots and will probably not buy another. Ebay sells actual smart pots for only a few dollar a pot so i will be buying some of those.
