Does fertilizer help grow bigger yields?

Discussion in 'First Time Marijuana Growers' started by TheSensi7, Mar 20, 2015.

  1. What exactly does the fertilizer do? Does it give you bigger yields off each plant or does it just give the buds more nutrients raising the quality? What do different kinds of fertilizers do? Should my first few plants just be soil grown or should I go straight in with using fertilizers?

  2. Fertlizers help keep nutes in the soil the plant needs and yes nutez can.give bigger yeild if used accordingly

  3. Plants grow by using light to turn water and co2 into carbohydrate, but they need 'nutrients' like people need vitamins in order to be healthy and function at maximum potential.

Nitrogen (N) is important for green vegetation as it is used quite alot in chlorophyl.  Once the plant has stopped producing new leaves it only needs a small amount of maintenance nitrogen.  Cannabis is a plant that on the whole doesn't like strong levels of nitrogen common in many "general purpose" fertiliser, especially during the flowering period.

Phosphorous (P) is important for various plant functions and particularly in fruit/flower development.  Higher levels start as you switch to flowering, and having a sufficient amount can definitely enable your plants to be able to produce big flowers that will hopefully get pollinated (they wish).

Potassium (K) is essential for a whole range of metabolic processes and for transporting fluids around, plus it is also important for producing flowers in all plants.  If the plant has plenty of potassium available at the time when it begins to develop flower buds, it will take advantage of that and try to produce as many as possible.  'PK Bloom boosters' usually have a P:K ratio of 1:2 because potassium is just so important for that purpose.

These are the macro nutrients, the NPK ones, and overall they need a lot of these to live.

There are also micronutrients, like Magnesium, Calcium, Iron, Copper, Sulfur, and some others, which are also essential ut required in only small amounts.  Often they are present in sufficient levels in decent fresh compost, but for long veg times in the same pot or in an inert medium, it becomes essential to add them.  Sufficient levels of the micro-nutrients are usually included in one of the nutrient bottles, but when you're feeding lightly I often find you need an extra boost of calmag to get you through.

All these things are present in regular compost, and if you have enough of it for your final plant size then extra fertiliser isn't required, although you are more likely to see signs of nutrient deficiency, depending.

  4.
Fertilizers give the plants the nutrients they need to grow. Think of them just like the vitamins and minerals that we need. If they don't get enough they won't be able to grow. if they have too many  it can cause problems so they need to have a specific nutrient to water ratio. The closest you can have the ratio to what the plant wants, the faster the plant is able to grow

  5. Think of nutrients, sun, and water as the building blocks for your buds. Without all of those components, you won't get good yields or good quality.

This is a plant lacking nutrients and probably over-watered as well.

And this is a plant with organic nutrients built into the soil.

And this is a bud grown with high quality organic soil.

  6. Fertilizers give the plant what they need in terms of nutrients. However, that does not mean that more fertilizer necessarily gives bigger yields. It comparable to vitamins. When humans take vitamins they absorb what is necessary. After that, the excess is either peed out and/or can actually cause pretty bad damage. You can overdose on vitamins. Don't OD your plants on fertilizer. Best of luck to you.
